In this short story, which is chon from Maugham’s Collected Short Stories, Maugham, by describing two brothers’ attitude toward life, examines the nature and inconsistent qualities of human beings.
George was a hard-working and respectable man with a descent job as a lawyer. He was also a faithful husband and a loving father to four daughters. He believed that industry should be rewarded and giddiness punished.
His brother Tom, however, was an unscrupulous and good-for-nothing scoundrel. He philandered with girls, danced, ate in most expensive restaurants…… Motto:

一、什么叫评注性状语(Comment adjuncts)
英语的状语主要有三种,一种是修饰性状语;二是评注性状语,即用于发表评论或表明看法;周庄古镇三是连接性状语,它在句子中既不起修饰作用,也不表明态度或看法,而是用于句子间起承接作用。如:
He did it carefully. 他做这事很仔细。(carefully为修饰性状语)
He is mad, I think. 我看他是疯了。(I think为评注性状语)
He learns easily, and what’s more, he remembers what he has learnt. 他学习起来很容易,而且他所学习过的都记得住。(what’s more为连接性状语)
二、评注性状语的种类

二、评注性状语的功能
