Unit Six  University Days
More about the essay and author
James Thurber attended Ohio State University from 1913 to 1918, but left without a degree. Tall, thin, and blind in one eye from a childhood accident, he suffered through the athletic and military program of the university in the World War I period. He once said he fell down a good deal “becau of a trick he had of walking into himlf”. In this essay Thurber recalled some of the high and low points of his years at Ohio State University. The essay is included in his autobiograph “My Life and Hard Times” (1933).
Thurber’s purpo is satiric. Yet his technique is esntially comic, for the express his disapproval in ridicule and make us laugh at the inanities of the university and its teachers and students.
Thurber achieves ridicule by the clever u of illustrations. For the satirist, examples have veral virtues. They offer him a preci target at which to aim. They make very clear
to his readers exactly what he thinks is wrong. They give to his indictment the substance that only specific details can give. Without them Thurber’s essay would be vague and ineffectual, with them it is deadly.
Thurber’s humorous pro is a unique compound of craziness, fantasy and supersanity.
