People can’t guess what does death look like. In ancient times, people thought that death wore a black robe, had a skull-like face, and carried a sickle. But he is not, according to a small piece of truth in page 307. He busted all the guess but did not give us a certain answer (like Mitchell’s age).

In page 309, death told us that war is his boss. He always asks for more. So all the guess about death are totally wrong, and death is still a mystery to everyone. The third reason of death making the book attractive is that death’s words are fun but they make you think a lot. On page178, he said about Hans, “Not many men are lucky enough to cheat me twice.” Also there is a similar quote in page 33, “He had already cheated me in one world war but would later be out into another.” The show that Hans had already escaped from death once, but he would escape twice. The quotes make people guess what would happen to Hans in the World War 2, and make readers to continue reading quickly.

I think that death, as a special character in this book, does make the book more interesting, and contain more mysteries and thoughts. If you replace death into any other
character in this book, it won't be the same. So maybe that’s why Markus Zusak ud death to tell the story. It makes The Book Thief more attractive.
