How to Apply for an F1 Visa to US?

This is the most common type of student visa. If you wish to engage in academic studies in the United States at an approved school, you need an F-1 visa.
How to apply?
Step 1:  Complete the Online Visa Application
Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 – Learn more about completing the DS-160. You must: 1) complete the online visa application and 2) print the application form confirmation page to bring to your interview.
Photo –You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. Your photo must be in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements.
Step 2: Pay the SEVIS fee
Once you’ve received your I-20, you will need to pay a SEVIS Fee to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. In order to pay, complete the Form I-901 along with the payment via mail or the Internet. The SEVIS fee must be paid at least 3 business days prior to a visa interview or the filing of the change of status application in the U.S. Learn more about the SEVIS fee.
Step 3: Schedule your appointment at the US consulate where you intend to apply from, get your CGI number which is applicable for most US embassies/consulates all over the world (Plea note: US embassies/consulates in some countries will have their own process, not generating a CGI number. So plea double check on their official websites.)
Step 4: Pay your non-refundable visa application fee by following the instruction of the US embassy/consulate you are applying your visa from.
Step 5: Come back to your visa interview appointment and finish the rest process. Prepare your interview materials and Visit the Embassy/Consulate of the United States on the date and time of your visa interview.
Document you should bring with you to interview:
1. A passport valid for travel to the United States with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States.
2. One 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) photo, which should show a clear, front view, full face of you, taken within the last six months.
3. Printed DS-160 Application Form confirmation page (the Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application)
4. An approved original signed Form I-20 from your U.S. school or program.
5. A Form I-901 SEVIS fee receipt indicating you paid the SEVIS fee.

You may also bring whatever supporting documents you believe support the information provided to the consular officer. You can choo the documents listed below:
•Documents demonstrating strong financial, social, and family ties to your home country that will compel you to return to your country after your program of study in the United States ends.
• Financial and any other documents you believe will support your application and which give credible evidenc e that you have enough readily-available funds to meet all expens for the first year of study and that you have access to funds sufficient to cover all expens while you remain in the United States.
•Photocopies of bank statements will not be accepted unless you can also show original copies of bank statements or original bank books.
•If you are financially sponsored by another person, bring proof of your relationship to the sponsor (such as your birth certificate), the sponsor's most recent original tax forms and the sponsor's bank books and/or fixed deposit certificates.
•Academic documents that show scholastic preparation. Uful documents include school transcripts (original copies are preferred) with grades, public examination certificates (A-levels, etc.), standardized test scores (SAT, TOEFL, etc.), and diplomas.
•Rearch/study plans with detailed information about your planned studies or rearch in the United States, including the name and e-mail address of your advising professor and/or the head of your department in the United States.

•A resume/CV (in English) that provides detailed information about your past academic and professional experience, including a complete list of all publications to which you have contributed.
•Official transcript s covering courwork at U.S. institutions (for returning students).

How to pay SEVIS fee?
A prospective F or M student with a country of citizenship or country of birth of Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria or Gambia must pay by money order, Western Union Quick Pay or certified check drawn from a U.S. bank. SEVP will accept third party payments, meaning someone el can pay your I-901 SEVIS fee using the same method of payment. For students who cannot pay the fee by credit card, third party payers are also restricted from paying the fee by credit card.

You can access the PDF version of the Form I-901 on SEVP's website here. Print and mail in your paper Form I-901 with your check or money order, according to the instructions on the form.

What should I do after obtaining my visa?
1) ENTER THE UNITED STATES NO MORE THAN 30 DAYS IN ADVANCE
Enter the United States no earlier than 30 days before and no later than the beginning date indicated on your I-20/ DS-2019. This is very important. While you may want to arrive sooner to find an apartment and prepare for school, U.S. law prohibits you from doing so. The only exception is for stu
dents who have transferred their SEVIS record from another school to NYU.
2) GETTING FROM THE AIRPORT TO YOUR FINAL NYC DESTINATION
There are three airports in the New York area:
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
LaGuardia Airport
Newark Liberty International Airport
Before arriving at the airport, you should have a plan for how you will travel from there to your final destination. There are many options for ground transportation, including taxis, car rvices, shuttle bus, subways, and trains. If you choo to travel into the city by car, the most convenient option, yellow taxis, are usually less expensive than car rvices. You can check the airports' websites for more information.
What should I bring with me when entering the US?
Plea note you will not be allowed to enter the United States in F-1 or M-1 status earlier than 30 days before your start date. When you arrive at a port of entry to the U.S. you must prent the following items:
●  A passport valid at least six months into the future;
●Your F-1 or J-1 visa (if you are Canadian you do not need an F-1 or J-1 visa);
●Your I-20 or DS-2019 (Plea bring your old I-20 form with you if you have);
●Copies of your admission letter and financial documents;
●And evidence that you have paid the SEVIS fee if you are a new student.
