Culture Shock糖包的做法
Good morning, everyone. In today's lecture, I'd like to talk about culture shock. Perhaps you think that studying in a different country is something that sounds very exciting. It is a new e

xperience, which brings the opportunity of discovering fascinating things and a feeling of freedom. In spite of the advantages, however, there are also some challenges you will encounter. You may have difficulty adjusting to a new culture and to tho parts of the culture not familiar to you. This is culture shock.
To be exact, [1]culture shock is the anxiety and feelings of surpri, disorientation, uncertainty, confusion, etc. felt when people have to operate within a different and unknown culture such as one may encounter in a foreign country. It grows out of the difficulties in assimilating the new culture, [2]causing difficulty in knowing what is appropriate and what is not. This is often combined with a dislike for or even disgust with certain aspects of the new or different culture. The shock often consists of four distinct stages, though not everyone pass through the stages.
[3]The first stage of culture shock is often overwhelmingly positive and far from bewildering. This is often called the "honeymoon stage" — when you're so fascinated with the language, the people and the food em like the greatest thing you've ever met. Also, the amument of life in a new culture ems as though it will have no ending.
Eventually, however, the cond stage of culture shock appears. [4]This is the "hostility stage". You begin to notice that not everything is as good as you had originally thought it was. People don't treat you like a guest anymore. You get laughed at, you horribly offend a little old lady without knowing why. It is a basic emotion that permeates every part of the experience, from misunderstanding shopkeepers, to losing your keys or missing the bus. Frustration comes and goes, disillusion comes on like a monsoon and the pangs of homesickness can become debilitating.
Usually at this point in your adjustment to a new culture, [5]you devi some defen mechanisms to help you cope and to protect yourlf against the effects of culture shock. One type of coping mechanism is called "repression". This happens when you pretend that everything is acceptable and that nothing bothers you. [6]Another type of defen mechanism is called "regression". This occurs when you start to act as if you are younger than you actually are; you act like a child. You forget everything, and sometimes you become careless and irresponsible. The third kind of defen mechanism is called "isolation". You would rather be home alone, and you don't want to communicate with any
body, With isolation, you try to avoid the effects of culture shock, or at least that's what you think. Isolation is one of the worst coping mechanisms you can u becau it parates you from tho things that could really help you. The last type of defen mechanism is called "rejection". With this coping mechanism, you think you don't need anybody. You feel you are coping fine alone, [7]so you don't try to ask for help.
The defen mechanisms you utilize in the hostility stage are not helpful. If you only occasionally u one of the coping mechanisms to help yourlf survive, that is acceptable. You must be cautious, however. The mechanisms can really hurt you becau they prevent you from making necessary adjustments to the new culture.
After you deal with your hostile feelings, recognition of the temporary nature of culture shock begins. Then you come to the third stage called "recovery". In this stage, you start feeling more positive, [8]鼓励的句子and you try to develop comprehension of everything you don't understand. The whole situation starts to become more favorable; you recover from the symptoms of the first two stages, and you adjust yourlf to the new norms, values, and even beliefs and traditions of the new country. You begin to e that even though the disti
nctions of the culture are different from your own, it has elements that you can learn to appreciate.
The last stage of culture shock is called "adjustment". In this stage, you have reached a point where you actually feel good becau you have learned enough to understand the new culture. The things that initially made you feel uncomfortable or strange are now things that you understand. [9]This acquisition of understanding alleviates much of the stress. Now you feel comfortable; you have adjusted to the new culture.
Evidently, culture shock is something, you cannot avoid when living in a foreign country, but there are things you can do to make it easier on yourlf.
[10]One of the ways that you can lesn the overall shock of the culture is to learn as much as you can beforehand. But this means that you need to do more than read books or learn a new language; you will want to immer yourlf in the new culture in some way. Look for local groups of emigrants from that country or others that have done what you are hoping to do. The point is to get inside to look into the culture that you want to become a part of. And that means taking the time to learn.
Another good way is to slowly begin to dip your toes in the local goings on. Try out new foods and attend different local meetings to obrve how people interact with each other. You'll never learn about your new home if you never leave your new home. Meet your neighbors and try to learn about them. Take walks around your home and work place to e what you can obrve.
So far, we've discusd four stages of culture shock and how to deal with them. in our next lecture, we'll mainly discuss how the immigrants influence the local culture.

W: Today I have with me Raul Sanchez on our radio talk. He was a student at this college, er... how long ago?
M: I was here one and a half.., no, two years ago now.
W: Raul was a student in English class when he was at this college, and he is here to tell us about the many problems facing a non-native speaker in a British tertiary institution. What have you been doing since you graduated, Raul?
M: I was quite lucky when I left the college, becau I got a job pretty quickly with the London Dental Council. I'm still with them.
W: Could you tell us what cour you took here at the college?
M: Yes, I originally wanted to work in advertising, but I found it was too hard becau of my English. And so I changed my direction. I'm glad I did, becau I've now got an Associate Diploma in Dental Hygiene, and that's how [ managed to get a job with the council.
W: What exactly do you do with the council?
M: I work with a dentist, making sure that the patients are taken care of and all the necessary tools have been cleaned and prepared for u. Sometimes I must assist the dentist in complicated procedures. It's a demanding job, but I like it.
W: [1]You perform dental surgery?
M: [1]Not quite, but I do u tools to make the patients feel more comfortable during the operation. A lot of my time is spent in general checkups, cleaning teeth and demonstrating good dental practices. I also develop x-rays.
W: What exactly were the problems when you first arrived at the college?
M: I was very shy, you know. I couldn't communicate with the students in my class becau most of them were British, and my English was not very good. But I thought everything was OK, until I received the result of my first examination. The tutor was worried why I was so quiet in class. I told her it was becau I was afraid to ask a question. So she suggested that I talk to the school counlor.
W: What advice did the counlor give?
M: Well, [2]she was very kind and understanding, and I realized that I was doing the wrong cour. You have to be an "extrovert"..., you know, outgoing. I think it's a personal thing with me. You have to give a lot of opinions, and I am shy. So, [2]she suggested I ask more questions in class so I made it a rule to ask at least one or two questions every
lesson.
W: So you swapped cours and began to talk more in class. Was there anything el that the counlor suggested?
M: Yes, she said I shouldn't live with students from my own country. [2]She suggested I should share a hou with some British students. So I did, and my English improved much faster.
W: Are there any problems you currently have with English?为人处世的道理
M: Of cour, I ud to have a lot of trouble with the technical vocabulary in my field, but I picked it up very quickly. Now, it' [3]I have difficulty trying to understand the colloquial language of Britain; the way people express themlves here is sometimes strange to me.
W: I e. How do you increa your vocabulary? Plea give us some examples.
M: Well, I really like to watch movies. I recommend that you watch movies you have already en subtitled in your native language, but this time only listen to the English, don't read the subtitles! Also, it can be quite helpful to keep a journal of new expressions
you hear so you can ask your English friends about them.
W: Let's talk more about your cour at the college. Do you remember any study projects you were involved in?
M: Well, once we did a survey on the effects of different breakfast cereal on children's teeth. The ages ranged from 5-12 years old and we interviewed over i00 different kids from each age group, it was quite a big project! [4]We discovered that many cereals that were advertid as being healthy were just as bad for teeth as the well known sugar-coated brands.
W: Really? I can't believe that.
M: In fact, there are only few brands that contain many nutrients that help teeth grow and do not cau decay that leads to cavities and other bad dental hygiene. The problem is that many children become addicted to sweet, sugary cereal very young, and do not want to change.
W: Um, one last question. What about your future? Do you have any immediate plans?
M: [5]Well, in the short-term I'll continue to work as a dental assistant and gain more expe
rience. After two years, I plan to attend dental school to become a dentist. My long-term goal is to open my own dental practice here in Britain or maybe return to my own country and open a practice there.
W: I e. Thank you very much for sharing your experience.
M: My pleasure.

A.Spain has implemented tougher immigration policies.
B.Employers in Spain don't hire as many immigrants as before.
C.Immigrants don't e many job opportunities in Europe.
D.The numbers of immigrants dropped in Spain and Franc √
解析:[听力原文]
[8]Governments in France and Spain have recently announced drops in the numbers of illegal immigrants coming to their shores, partly due to tougher policies, but also becau of the global economic downturn. Spain's government says the numbers of would-be immigrants from Africa fell almost half, from 13,000 in 2008 to just more than 7,000 last year. The numbers of illegal immigrants arriving in France has also dropped, with Immigration Minister Eric Besson attributing the slowdown to the economic crisis and tougher immigration policies. Immigration specialist Georges Lemaitre, of the Paris-bad Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, is not surprid by the reports. "The first thing that affects migration is the fact employers do not want as many workers," he said. "They are not looking to hire as many immigrants. So this is the first thi
ng that reduces the level of migration. The cond is the fact immigrants themlves do not e many opportunities. So they themlves tend to come less often." Lemaitre says this trend is reflected elwhere in Europe and in richer nations as a whole. And it concerns legal and illegal immigrants.
