In “Birkin’s Struggle for Separateness in David Herbert Lawrence’s Women in Love” in枫红 Jo
urnal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies, published in April 2000, Roland A. Pierloot says that in Women in Love, Birkin’s fulfillment in the relationship with Ursula is prented as the result of a struggle to achieve the paration of herlf from a devouring mother image. Lawrence’s unconscious fantasies concerning the process contributing to the achievement of this goal are expresd in his depiction of Birkin’s strategies. Pierloot distinguishes three different strategies: the homoerotic escape, the direct attack on the devouring mother image and the anal erotic lf-assurance. Pierloot analyzes the devouring mother concept as well as the strategies and check whether the data related in the novel can fit in psychoanalytic formulations of relations and fantasies concerning the paration-individuation process in infancy and early childhood. Pierloot also wonders to what extent the eventual relationship of Birkin with Ursula, prenting as a “fulfillment,” can be conceived as a mature xual love relation.
In The Person Who Look for the Rainbow—David Herbert Lawrence published in 2000, Wu Houkai points out that Women in Love is also man in love in fact. The relationship between Birkin and Gerald Crich is subtle. There is strange hostility between them. This h
