I. Introduction
1.1 Rearch Motives
At this stage of my rearch, I have decided to lect the love and hostility analyzing in Women in Love as my rearch motives and objectives. David Herbert Lawrence is one of the most excellent and influential writers in the twentieth century. He is a prolific writer. He creates novels, short stories, articles, poems, plays, literary criticism, essays and travel books, of which the novels are the most outstanding. He is a controversial figure during his time. The reason why he is so controversial is that his writings are often related to x. The major theme of his whole works is human relationship in the modern world where the natural harmony between man and man, man and woman has been destroyed by industry and modernism. Women in Love is the quel novel of David Herbert Lawrence’s The Rainbow. It tells the love affairs of the two sisters, Ursula and Gudrun. Lawrence paints a few vivid portraits in order to illustrate his striking views on love, x and marriage. After the publication of this novel, it caus many rearchers’ interests. They study this novel from different aspects. It also draws my interests in it.
In order to examine the rearch questions more effectively, I would like to adopt a method of illustration in my study, a summary type of study for this survey and a detailed analysis and discussion for this thesis.
1.2 Literature Review
In order to have a more comprehensive outlook about the issues I have examined, I will first to do a state-of-the-art type of study, and then e what has happened in this area over the past 20 or more years. Women in Love is one of the greatest novels in English literature, and David Herbert Lawrence tells the love affairs of the two sisters. Many rearchers have analyzed this novel from different perspectives, so some initial resources I want to u in my literature review include the following aspects.
In Lawrence’s Leadership Politics and the Turn against Women新生儿干呕 published in 1988, Cornelia Nixon indicates that Ursula is afraid of eing the village of minefield in The Rainbow. However, the village becomes the main scene in人生规划作文 Women in Love. The minefield is very dirty and ugly. Nixon tells that Lawrence does not want to define the latter novel as
the illusion that can solve the problems of this dilemma. The people in Women in Love become more dirty, lonely and corrupted.
In The Selected Pro of Lawrence, published in 1996, Hei Ma tells that beauty and x have something in common, just like flame and fire. Hei Ma also says that if people hate x, he may hate beauty. Sex and beauty can’t be parated, just like life and consciousness. Intuition is the intelligence that originates from x and beauty.
In “The Analysis of Modernism in Women in Love 梦见别人追杀我from Three Points” in Newspaper of Society and Science from An Qing Teachers Collage黄鹤楼资料, published in 1997, Xie Yaqun points out that nowadays, most critics admit that 南车四方Women in Love is David Herbert Lawrence’s the most famous work. However, this novel is not easy to be understood. One of the most important reasons is that David Herbert Lawrence us a lot of modernism in this novel. Xie Yaqun indicates that in order to understand this novel easily, the readers should learn some modernism.
In “Birkin’s Struggle for Separateness in David Herbert Lawrence’s Women in Love” in枫红 Jo
urnal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies, published in April 2000, Roland A. Pierloot says that in Women in Love, Birkin’s fulfillment in the relationship with Ursula is prented as the result of a struggle to achieve the paration of herlf from a devouring mother image. Lawrence’s unconscious fantasies concerning the process contributing to the achievement of this goal are expresd in his depiction of Birkin’s strategies. Pierloot distinguishes three different strategies: the homoerotic escape, the direct attack on the devouring mother image and the anal erotic lf-assurance. Pierloot analyzes the devouring mother concept as well as the strategies and check whether the data related in the novel can fit in psychoanalytic formulations of relations and fantasies concerning the paration-individuation process in infancy and early childhood. Pierloot also wonders to what extent the eventual relationship of Birkin with Ursula, prenting as a “fulfillment,” can be conceived as a mature xual love relation.
In The Person Who Look for the Rainbow—David Herbert Lawrence published in 2000, Wu Houkai points out that Women in Love is also man in love in fact. The relationship between Birkin and Gerald Crich is subtle. There is strange hostility between them. This h
ostility almost clos to a kind of love.
In “On the Artistic Characteristics of David Herbert Lawrence’s Women in Love” in 投资啦Newspaper of Shanghai University of Electric Power, published in 2003, Shen Yan and Meng Gungjun indicate that this novel develops the characteristics in a unique way and point out that the analysis of the artistic characteristics of D.
