Book report
“I stood listening to that musical vibration from my lofty slope, to tho flashes of parate cries with a kind of demure murmur for background, and then I knew that the hopelessly poignant thing was not Lolita's abnce from my side, but the abnce of her voice from that concord.”
“我听见孩童的笑声,我难过的不是身边没有洛丽塔,是笑声里没有她”
On reading this, I can’t help bursting into tears. I don’t want to bother the moral issues in the novel or condemn Humbert冶力关’s immoral behavior of ducing a 12-year-old girl. What touched me most is his extreme love for Lolita even this turns into occupation, desire and a burden to her. No one remains unmoved to Humbert’s unconditional and dedicated love for Lolita, which casts shadow on laws and morality.项目进度表
When firstly published, the book was regarded as immoral pornography. Serious readers sh
汉堡包英文ould concern more about social responsibility, and it reminds me of Ulyss or Lady Chatterly’s lover苏教版四年级上册数学教案. However, I don’t want to talk about it from the perspectives and neither does the author Nabokov himlf. He hates Freud’s psychological theories as well as a lot of discussions on morality in陀思妥耶夫斯基novels. What he wants to pursue is the beauty of art, no wonder he writes: “The moral n in mortals is the duty. We have to pay on mortal n of beauty.” As far as I’m concerned, this is a story about the eternal gap between desire and occupation, ideal and reality. Also this kind of beauty derives not only from artistic poetry but also from the guilty of depravity.
The novel duces me into identifying with Humbert, a complex and multifaceted character .Many people criticize Humbert, the most nsitive and civilized fellow, for his aberrant personality. As a disguid artist with extreme individualism, he is nsitive, imaginative and obstinate. I view Humbert’s “loving little girl” tendency as a kind of psychological phenomenon. At the very beginning of the novel, the writer relatively briefly depicted the early loving experience of Humbert. He was madly hopelessly in love with a girl named Annabel, who later died of epidemic, leaving Humbert’s soul to bleed from that
day on. The shock of Annabel’s death consolidated his frustration, which later becomes a permanent obstacle to any further romance, as well as the tortured love and affection towards Lolita. In Humberd’s ca, the “Annabel” pha later becomes in existence of his “preconscious level”, from which memories and thoughts that have not been represd can be brought to the surface and affect his further deeds. As a result, his love keeps for little girls long after he has left his own childhood.
Then he can’t help falling love with Lolita at the first sight and does everything he can including marrying her mother to get clo to his light of life, fire of loins, his sin and soul. When Lolita’s mother Mrs. Haze discovers his wicked motivations, she threatens to take Lo away so that Humbert will never e her again. Luckily for Humbert, Haze runs out and is killed in a car accident. The convenient twist of fate pushes the mother out of the picture, leaving Humbert and Lolita, his new step daughter alone together. He then can freely take Lolita anywhere as he likes in the name of her father. Here they begin an incestuous relationship on the American highway and flee in disorder. The author portrayed Humbert in a way as an extremely man as he could who posss a strong d
esire to control Lolita. In order to occupy Lo’s body and soul forever, Humbert stays at a place for a while with Lo before they t out for another. Yet he spares no effort to prevent Lo from getting in touch with other boys. Lolita is just a production of Humbert’s consciousness, and it is a phantasm which he is eager to grab from the outside reality and time. His love for her is complicated, twisted and restricted rather than tolerant and open. The real Lolita never exists, and what remains is Humbert’s constant eking for a perfect image like a Pluto’s ideal world. He madly ……However, his “nymphet” can never understand the crazy affection, so she finally left him for good. The lost of his fairy hope in life, Humbert still exists, but ceas to live. The love and their eternal moment bury deeply into his heart, evoking his poetic memory.
Is he an opportunist, a murderer, or a man of metal disorder? In ordinary life, Humbert is no wonder a monster, xual predator . However,he’s just an extreme embodiment of evil side of humanity, as Baudelaire’s “evil flower”. Deep down in men’s heart, there is libido for little girls. Normal people just try to bury and disgui the impul, their subconsciousness id. Humbert merely conveys his own feelings without concealing. So it

It isn’t until many years later does Humbert receive news from Lolita, and she has been married, pregnant and desperately in need of money. When he asks her to go with him, nothing can prove better than her undoubted refusal that she has never loved him, not a single moment. Meanwhile Humbert gets to know Quilty, who once duced her and took her away from him. For the years when Humbert finally realizes he has robbed Lolita of her normal childhood and ruined her life, he really wants to compensate for his wrongdoings. But it is Quilty who destroys his last hope. In despair, he madly kills Quilty to get his own redemption. In the prison, he writes down the story in memory of Lolita. “On wanted H.H. to exist at least a couple of months longer, so as to have him make you live in the minds of later generations. I am thinking of aurochs and angels, the cret of durable pigments, prophetic sonnets, the refuge of art. And this is the only immortality you and I may share, my Lolita.”
The novel reflects many famous love stories, with allusions of Dante’s falling love with 9-year-old Alice , Allen Poe’s marriage with 14 year-old Virginia and the “little fairy” in Virgil’s writings. Nabokov also salutes to some of his favorite writers by imitating their themes, such as Poe’s “death of beautiful woman”, Joyce’s lf-consciousness, as well as “time” in Prust’s works. Humbert’s affection for little girls satirizes the psychoanalysis of Frued. The whole novel combines Pornography, detectives, repent, literature of highway and some traditional elements of Shakespearian tragedy.

Whatever, Humbert succeeds in keeping Lolita immortal in our mind and the 12-year-old girl will remain untanished in the hands of time. “Lolita” is included in dictionaries as an expression of the early-maturing girls who are ductive and tempting. As far as its enormous influence is concerned, the book “Lolita” will undoubtedly leave its indelible imprints in literature history.
