1.(2023秋·海南高三期末统考)I always believe in the saying: Things will eventually sort themlves out. In the face of difficulty and trouble, I can always persuade mylf to do my work first without enough conditions.
Yesterday, we just moved into a new hou and spent all our money. So we had to go through the rest of the month until my husband got paid.
Today, my daughter, Laurie, went to school. After a while, out-of-breath and tired, our little girl ran back a block becau she’d forgotten to tell me that it was her turn to bring cupcakes for the class-—today! I answered her with a promi to reach her classroom at noon with the cupcakes. She ran to school again, happy.
Two minutes later, imagining Laurie’s trusting smile when I delivered on the promi, I arched in the boxes for baking tins and the mixer. I confidently t them on the counter and then opened the refrigerator, only to discover there were no eggs! How would I make cupcakes without eggs?
I tried to figure out how I could fix the problem. Could I borrow some from neighbors or friends? Could I
buy some on credit(赊账)? It was almost 9: 30 and I was running out of time. A little voice inside me whispered, “Start to do your work first! Things will eventually sort themlves out.” “Okay,” I said to mylf, “I have to try my best to keep my word to my little girl and the worst result that might happen is that I bake ‘cakes’ with no eggs.”
The next step was an act of faith. I turned on the oven and measured all the materials as my little son lined the tins with paper cups. We’d just finished making the frosting(糖霜)when I heard the mailman clo the box at the front door. Of cour! The mailman could nd us a refund (退款)check or something in the mail! I rushed to the door to get the mail and was shocked by what I found.

【答案】
There, just under the mailbox, were two boxes of eggs! I looked up and down the street and saw no one. Leaving the egg mystery for the moment, I raced into the hou and got tho cupcakes finished, cooled, frosted, and delivered shortly before noon. Laurie waved and smiled as the teacher clod the door, and I walked back home wondering about the mysterious eggs. I had two-dozen eggs left, so I decided to make some more cupcakes and then the phone rang.
质量体The phone call was from my friend Bonnie. She asked whether I had found some eggs at my front door. About 8:00 or so that morning she met my daughter and learned I would make some cupcakes. She knew we had just moved and that money might be tight for me at that moment. So she bought the most expensive material so that I could keep my promi to my daughter. After hearing that, I expresd my heartfelt thanks to her and told her what had happened. One hour later, I appeared in front of Bonnie’s door, carrying some cupcakes.

2.(2023秋·广东深圳高三期末统考)One day last June, I picked my son up from after school care to take him to the cond of his twice-weekly boxing class. He was tired and hungry and didn’t feel like going. “Can you drive me to the dam (大坝), Mom? I want to find something fun there,” he begged. The Colliery Dam is a pleasant attraction in our town. Beautiful big trees with birds calling, a freshwater rervoir (水库)filled with fish, and acres of paths to wander. But I insisted I had decided that it was important that he finish what he started, and that it was equally important to teach him that sometimes we have to do things even when we don’t feel like it.
Effectively, I was ignoring an eight-year-old’s request for some rest. He went to school five days a week, as
well as before and after school care; he had a tutor once a week, two boxing class and gymnastics on the weekend. However, I felt it justified in that he’s a very active boy and needs ways to get out all his energy.
But on this particular day, he was not going to let me ignore his feelings, however hard I tried. He even declared that he would never go to the boring boxing class and instead take the painting cours he had been longing for. As usual, I rejected, claiming that’s an activity for girls. As we got in the hot car for a 15-minute drive to boxing, he returned to a three-year-old--he screamed and cried and kicked my at.
We pulled into the parking lot, both of us worn out, annoyed and angry. My son took off his at belt and curled (蜷缩)into a ball on the floor. What was I doing? Why was I so determined that he go to boxing? Was I worried that his abnce would reflect badly on me as a parent somehow? Wouldn’t it actually teach him that I heard he was tired and hungry and needed a break and that it was just as well that boys took painting class? “Put on your at belt,” I said. “We’re going to the dam.”

【答案】
When we arrived at the dam, I noticed the tension disappear from both of our bodies. “The trees and plants can talk to us if we just listen,” I said. And we both listened. We reached the water’s edge and rolled up our pants and walked in. We built a big hou out of bits of wood, and just sat and enjoyed the peace without saying a word. When we left an hour later, my son was a different person. He was laughing and joking, light and airy as the gentle wind.
My son has now quit boxing and is taking painting once a week. We have decided that weekends are for resting and playing in nature, and not for any more class. He has been in good mood since we came back from the dam: he is helpful, generous and agreeable—in fact, we both are. I am so grateful that I got out of my own head that day and listened. We both learned the importance of a “nature break” that day, and we continue to value the breaks as an important part of our overall health and well-being.
