Cell Phones
Believe it or not, cell phones have been around for over a quarter of a century. The first commercial (商业的) cell phone system was developed by the Japane in 1979. But cell phones have changed a lot since that time. The early cell phones were big and heavy but they have been developed into small and light palm-sized models. There have been huge developments in their functions, too. We have had cell forwarding, text messaging, answering rvices and hands-free u for years, but now there are countless new us, such as instant access to the internet and receiving and nding photos.
Cell phones have become very common in our lives; recent statistics suggest as many as one in three people on the planet now have a cell phone, and most of them say they can’t live without one. Cell phones are ud in every area of our lives and have become a necessary tool, ud for esntial arrangements, social contact and business. They have made it easier to call for help on the highway. They have made it possible to keep in touch with people” on the move” when people are traveling.
Cell phones have made communication easier and have reduced the need for family arguments. We can u cell phones to let our family know we’ll be late or if there’s a change of plan or an emergency(紧急情况)。Cell phones have ead the worries of millions of parents when their teenag
ers are out late, and they can now contact their children at any time.
This does not mean that cell phones are all good news. They have brought with them a number of new headaches for their owners: it costs a lot to replace stolen phones, something that is becoming a frequent occurrence, and have you ever en such huge phone bills? More rious, however, is the potential health problem they bring: there are fears that radiation from the phones may cau brain tumor (肿瘤)。This may be a time bomb waiting to happen to younger people who have grown up with cell phones that they simply can’t live without.

Energy Cycle (能量循环)
Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you work, you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel
most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak(顶点). For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues(自言自语) as: “Get up , John! You’ll be late for work again!” the possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what the energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has. You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If our energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, ri before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam (鼓起干劲) and
work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed for a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome arch for clean clothes by laying them out the night before.

①what fun it is to jump into a pool or go swimming in a river in summer! How joyful and
relaxing it is to have a game of table tennis after a day of study at school! And how exciting it is to play or watch a clo game of basketball or volleyball!
②All over the world, millions of people take part in different6 kinds of sports. Sports are
perhaps the most popular form of relaxation that almost all can enjoy, whether boys or girls, men or women, young or old.
③ Some people em to think that sports and games are unimportant things that people do, at times when they are not working, instead of going to the cinema, listening to the radio, or sleeping. But in fact sports and games can be of great value, especially to people who work with their brains most of the day. They should not be treated only as amuments(消遣). Sports and games build our bodies, prevent us from getting too fat, and keep us healthy. But the are not their only us. They give us
valuable practice in helping the eyes, brains and muscles to work together.
④ In table tennis, the eyes e the ball coming, judge its speed and direction, and pass this information on to the brain. The brain then has to decide what to do, and nds its orders to the muscles of the arms, legs, and so on, so that the ball is met and hit back where the players wants it to go. All this must happen with great speed, and only tho who have a lot of practice at table tennis can do this successfully. For tho who work with their brains, the practice of such skills is especially uful.
⑤ sports and games are also very uful for character-training. From their lessons at school, boys and girls may learn about such virtues as unlfishness, courage, discipline and love of one’s country; but what is learned in books cannot have the same deep effect on a child’s character as what is learned through experience.
