Chapter 1  Standard Orders on Board Vesl
1Helm (Wheel) Orders
When a ship proceeds at a or into a harbor, is should be steered with great care. The pilot or the captain gives the helm orders to the steersman. The steersman must repeat and carry out all the orders correctly and immediately. When the orders have been carried out, the steersman must report the fact and the cour being steered. The steersman is never allowed to mistake the starboard helm for the port helm and vice versa. A little carelessness may cau great damage or loss.

2Engine Orders
Any engine order given should be repeated by the person operating the bridge telegraph(s) and the officer on watch should ensure the order is carried out correctly and immediately.
In vesls fitted with twin propellers, the “both” should be added to all orders affecting both shafts, e.g. “Full ahead both”, and “Slow astern both”, except that the words “stop all engines” should be ud, when appropriate. When required to manoeuvre twin propellers independently, this should be indicated, i.e. “full ahead starboard”, “half astern port”, etc.
Where thrusters are ud, e the following orders in the table.
For vesls with variable pitch propellers, the meaning of the order would include the combination of pitch and revolutions as indicated in ship’s orders.
