【Abstract】Mr．Ma's Compleat Grammar馬氏文通is famous as the first comprehensive grammar

好老师教育INTＲODUCTION
Ma Jianzhong，a polyglot and diplomat in the late Qing era，enjoys a wide fame for his talents in diplomatic skills and linguistic knowledge．The latter，in particular，enables him to become one of the renowned historical figures in Chine modern language history due to his minal work on Chine grammar．
Mr．Ma's Compleat Grammar，written by Ma Jianzhong，has been on the one hand，regarded and praid as the foundation for Chine grammar，and on the other hand criticized as a clo foll
ower of western grammatical traditions for over a century．This paper，however，argues that Mr．Ma's Compleat Grammar is a hybrid of western grammatical thought and Chine indigenous grammatical traditions．Ma's endeavor to incorporate sub-class of word （noun，verb and other class non-existent in Chine traditions）into the more general word typology in terms of full words实字and empty words虚字（a distinction dating back to Imperial China）indicates a combination between western and eastern ideas of grammar．In
