Tiffany is delighted to meet the robbers, and they take her back to their hideout in place of their usual haul of gold and jewels. Tiffany asks what they plan to do with their riches, but the robbers had never thought about spending money before. They soon find themlves embarking on a completely new career: they gather all of the lost, unhappy, and abandoned children that they can find, and then they buy a big castle so they can give all of the children a happy home.

温格尔（Tomi Ungerer, 1931 ~ ）出生于法国史特拉斯堡的一个钟表匠家庭，有一个哥哥，两个妹妹。
1956 年，温格尔来到纽约定居。1973 年，温格尔带有叛逆色彩的绘本《不要妈妈亲》出版之后，在美国受到猛烈批评。温格尔倍感失望，于是告别了绘本创作，一直到 1990 年之后，温格尔才再度创作绘本。到了 1998 年，温格尔获得国际儿童读书联盟（IBBY）颁发的国际安徒生大奖。

被强盗收养的孤儿，都带着红色的尖头帽；再比如，到了绘本最后，孤儿们为纪念三个强盗，盖起三座高塔，这三座塔，也都是尖头帽的形状。
《三个强盗》的画面背景，应该是欧洲的山岳地带。《三个强盗》的开篇，和其他老故事一模一样。故事第一句，便是“从前有三个凶狠的强盗（Once upon a time there were three fierce robbers）”，作者没有告诉我们强盗的名字，也没有交代强盗的身世背景，只告诉我们三个强盗的武器分别是“喇叭枪”、“胡椒喷雾器”，“红板斧”。
探讨《三个强盗》这部现代绘本，我想先介绍一下作者的童年。
温格尔在法国东北地区长大，第二次世界大战期间，温格尔的家乡被德军占领。由于德军在当地推行德语教育，所以，温格尔在学校等公共场合说德语，在家说法语。二战结束后，温格尔看到一些在德国占领期间，赞美德国文学的家伙，却在德国战败后，转过头大肆抨击德国文学。看到这些见风使舵的家伙，让温格尔渐渐明白世道人心的凄冷。
温格尔的童年经历，使得温格尔在作品中，不采用绝对的“善恶两分法”。温格尔透过自己的作品，传递这样的观念：每个人的心里，都有善良和邪恶的一面。人们所处的生存环境，决定人们的善恶偏向。
