Couldn't she smile? If only she were taller. They loved her kicking, but ... Like thousands of other women, Twyla Tharp went to New York with big dreams. The Indiana farm girl entered Barnard College to study art history. But her real interest was dance.
To meet the college's physical education requirements, she studied dance with Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham. Soon she was fitting her schoolwork in between two or three dance class a day. A dream was born. But dance is not exactly a surefire (必定成功的), lifelong job.
When she graduated in the mid1960s, she tried out for roles, but she just didn't em to fit in anywhere. She lacked the technical skills to be a ballerina. “They loved my kicking,” she wrote in her book Push Comes to Shove, “but couldn't I smile?” And she
also learned she was too small in every direction to work as a Latin Quarter showgirl, but she still tried. Tharp wondered, “Will I ever be a dancer? Do I have any business dancing?” The only way to find out, it emed, was to form her own group and create her own style of dance.有关数学的名言
For five long years, Tharp and her group practiced hard every day in the bament of a Greenwich Village church. Sometimes the cleaners had to “throw them out” on Sunday mornings. They worked for little pay and almost no recognition. Constantly, Tharp asked herlf, “Do I want to do this, or don't I?”
Forty years later, after choreographing (编舞) more than 100 dances on Broadway and in movies such as Hair and Ragtime, Tharp still asks herlf that question. And the answer is yes.
