its implicit intimacy. “Everything there is to say is understood” is
updatesawkward. Whatever the appropriate English rendering may be, this expression fittingly describes
Zhang Yimou’s latest film, “Under the Hawthorn Tree” (《山楂树之恋》 Sh`nzh`sh& Zh~ Li3n ).
旺旺英语学习网站The much-hyped movie, hailed as the “cleanest love story in history ,” is a departure from Zhang’s splashy farce “A Simple Noodle Story” last year. Since his directorial debut in “Red Sorghum,” Zhang has favored vivid colors. But, this time, he went with a muted palette and spar dialogue to pay homage to the love between “young intellectuals” (知青 zh~q~ng ) towards the end of Cultural Revolution.
Jingqiu is a delicate dewdrop of a girl who comes from the city to be re-educated in a village homestay . Laosan is a dashing member of a geology unit working in the same village. Their love blossoms against a background of uniformly drab khakis—en vogue attire in the
1970’s—occasionally enlivened with shots of cheerful yellow flower fields.The story’s central conflict
s stem from Jingqiu’s status. Father has been nt away to rectify his “rightist” thinking; Mother is ill with an
unnamed dia; brother and sister are young. Jingqiu must be on her best behavior to ri above the family’s tarnished reputation. Jingqiu and Laosan fall in love at first sight, but their love is forbidden yet. She’s on the cusp of attaining her goal—building a record (档案d3ng'3n ) beyond reproach and earning a full-time teaching job. Any misstep, even being en with a boy , could jeopardize her future.

And so, Laosan patiently waits…and waits… and waits. Little is said and done. The romance unfolds with a walk along a river, an interrupted bike ride and a stolen night together. From the slow and mild scenes emerges a pure love.
The story lives up to its “clean” reputation. The raciest scene in the movie shows the pair lying stiff as sticks on a single bed, clothed and dutifully parated by a white sheet pulled taut over Jingqiu’s tiny frame. The most “skin” is shown on screen when Jingqiu reluctantly changes into a bathing suit, putting a shirt over it. Jingqiu is so

As the characters cope with forces beyond their control, they repeat this mantra: “One day the policies may change.” Whatever obstacles may now be in the way , the lovers are hopeful that they shall overcome.

ultimately cuts their time short. This wouldn’t be a real Chine love story without an element of tragedy, and a lot of bitter to go with the little bit of sweet.
“Under the Hawthorn Tree” is not Zhang’s best work (tho decades have pasd), but is certainly worth watching. If nothing el, the movie faithfully depicts a quintesntially
Chine romance.
