II. Background Information
1. Grand Central Station: (often popularly called Grand Central Terminal) The monumental railway st
ation was constructed in 1903-1913 by the New Y ork and Harlem Railroad company. It is a grand building which rves as a transportation hub connecting train, metro, car and pedestrian traffic in an efficient way. It has 67 train tracks on two different levels. The two levels are both below ground, with 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower.
函授大专Grand Central Station is located in midtown Manhattan in New York City, 42 Street and Park Avenue interction. It is the world's largest train station. Grand Central Station was officially opened in 1913. Since the station is completed, the Park Avenue near the station like mushrooms on a number of hotels, office buildings and luxury, and thus become the Manhattan Island where the highest in the land. 2. Love is usually likened to a candle in the dark or a fireplace in a cold room. It is so important in our lives that we cannot live without it. Although most people believe that true love is nurtured through frequent contacts and regular face-to-face communication between two people, many would understand the thrill of “love at first sight”. However, could anyone imagine that there could be true love between a man and a woman who had never met? In this ction, the author is going to tell us
a story about a love affair between an army officer and a young lady who took to each other first through correspondence and then after
billiardsa vere test their mutual lik ing turned to true love.
3.Love, mutual or one-sided, long or short, strong or tender, is usually blind. According to Shakespeare, reason and love keep little company together. In that light, love at first sight is bound to last so long as love from both sides remains blind.
4. It takes time for true love to grow, just as a tree needs time to bear fruit. Without passage of time or exertion of effort, any form of love, including love at first sight, will stand no chance of eternity.
5. Love is born of beauty in the distance. As an old Chine saying goes, distance produces beauty. A ca in point is the popular poem—Y ou live at the head of the Y angtze River while I live at its end; I miss you day and night without eing you ever; but the truth is we drink water from the same river.
6. True love is bad on the ups and downs of lovers in daily life. Deprived of such ris and falls in everyday life, lovers find no way to know, understand, and respect each other from all sides, thus making it impossible for both to be sure whether they are a good match.
Ⅲ.T ext Structure Analysis
The passage is a narration article. It is a short story, and its structural organization can be brought to light when we inrt some questions between paragraphs. Generally speaking, the story can be divided into nine parts.
Part One (Para. 1) This part is the beginning of the story. The paragraph tells us about a tall young army officer, John Blandford, waiting to meet a woman at six o'clock. We learn something strange here. He had never actually en her before, but this woman had filled a special place in his life and her written words have given him strength.
Part Two (Paras.2-3) Paragraph 2 tells us who the woman is and how she emerges in the young man's life. The woman is Hollis Meynell who writes him letters, wishing him safety and courage and giving him her support during his military rvice. Paragraph 3 goes on to tell us more about the woman, which makes the relationship between the two clear. The woman's letter-writing goes on nonstop for 13 months. She even writes to him when not getting his letters of reply. During the difficult time of war, her letters give him much courage to survive the war. Then gradually he believes that he loves her and she loves him. Fate has brought them together.
Part Three (Para.4) This part tells us what had happened after they fell in love with each other. Naturally John wants to have a photo of the woman since they have never met each other before. Dramatically enough, the woman declines the request. Detailed reasons have been offered by the woman. The woman is eking true love, not love becau of beautiful looks or loneliness. She would rather leave the question of love undecided until they meet each other in New Y ork some time later.
Part Four (Paras.5-7) This part describes the moment of their meeting. Only one minute to six, a young woman comes toward him. She is beautiful, just like springtime coming alive. Instinctively, he moves toward her. But the young woman is not wearing a ro, which was suppod to identify her.
Part Five (Paras.8-9) In the two paragraphs we can find that the young woman asks him if he's going in her direction. John Blandford, instantly moves one step clor to her. Then he thinks he finds the woman he is waiting for-Hollis Meynell.
Part Six ( Para. 10) Paragraph 10 is a surpri to readers. The woman who is wearing the ro is not the beautiful woman. This comes as quite a shock! Instead, Hollis is apparently a woman well past forty, who looks like a fossil to him. She has patches of gray hair and legs that are so fat that they are shaking. It is this older woman who is wearing the red ro.
Part Seven (Para. 11) This part clears readers' doubts. The beautiful young girl vanishes out of sight. Blandford is then left with a rious choice. Should he give in to his desire and follow the young woman? After brief thought, he decides not to. He holds himlf back, becau he wants to meet Hollis, the woman who spirit has
