Choo the best answer and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer sheet with a single line through the center. beside的近义词 Passage One Practically every rious study of Western history and the roots of the modern Western world starts with or very quickly focus on the ancient Greeks and their achievements. Everything Western is not rightfully traced back to the Greeks. Christianity, though influenced by the great Greek thinker Plato and the Romans, is esntially near Eastern in spirit and content. Our Western legal system is probably more influenced by the Romans;and our pro literature comes from traditions that evolved well after the heyday of Greek civilization. Still, our poetry is inspired by ancient Greek poetry and virtually every ideal(traditional or modern)unique to the West is derived from the ancient Greeks—particularly ancient Athens. Greek civilization came to be founded, in large part, on the ideals of freedom, optimism, cularism, rationalism, the glorification of both body and mind, and a high regard for the dignity and worth of the individual. Though the ancient Greeks had a great deal of respect for their “gods”, they did not feel they were the slaves of the “gods” or that the “gods” were in control of their lives. Instead, the Greeks came to believe that the thoughts and actions of mankind were determined by human beings. That being the ca, the Greeks strove to understand the world and to guide their future by rational and logical thoughts, not by superstitions or emotions. They believed that man was the greatest of creatures on earth and that both the body and the mind should be actively developed and encouraged to grow and become as strong as possible. Finally, the ancient Greeks felt that each parate and different person derved to be treated fairly and justly. They believed that each person had his own dignity and worthiness that could never be taken away and should never be attacked, assaulted, suppresd, denied, or ignored by anyone el—even the highest of Kings or the most powerful of people. Their culture was the first in the history of the West to be bad upon the primacy of the intellect. They were the first to believe firmly in the supremacy of free inquiry. They investigated any and all subjects without fear and considered no issue or problem beyond the scope of man’ s reason and thought. To them the mind was supreme over faith or dogma and logic, and science was superior to superstition. 31. The main idea of this passage would be ____. A. certain ancient Greeks who contributed to the development of Western culture B. particular individuals among the ancient Greeks who produced peerless intellectual and aesthetic achievements C. golden heritage of the ancient Greek civilization D. models of perfection for the culture of the West 32. It can be inferred from the passage that the ancient Greeks were____. A. under the sway of mysticism B. at the mercy of their passions C. primarily concerned with human interests and values D. given to a trust in the power of magical forces 悲伤的约定33. A. tenet B. tenure C. tenant D. taint 35. It can be inferred from the passage that the ancient Greek civilization____ . A. inspired the Western pro literature B. was the source from which mythology evolved C. was the origin to which everything western is justifiably traced back D. still rves as models of perfection for the culture of the West Passage Two Botany, the study of plants, occupies a peculiar position in the history of human knowledge. For many thousands of years it was the one field of awareness about which humans had anything more than the vaguest of insights. It is impossible to know today just what our Stone Age ancestors knew about plants, but from what we can obrve of preindustrial societies that still exist, a detailed learning of plants and their properties must be extremely ancient. This is logical. Plants are the basis of the food pyramid for all living things, even for other plants. They have always been enormously important to the welfare of people, not only for food, but also for clothing, weapons, tools, dyes, medicines, shelter, and a great many other purpos. Tribes living today in the jungles of the Amazon recognize literally hundreds of plants and know many properties of each. To them botany, as such, has no name and is probably not even recognized as a special branch of knowledge at all. Unfortunately, the more industrialized we become the farther away we move from direct contact with plants, and the less distinct our knowledge of botany grows. Yet everyone comes unconsciously on amazing amount of botanical knowledge, and few people will fail to recognize a ro, an apple, or an orchid. When our Neolithic ancestors, living in the Middle East about 10, 000 years ago, discovered that certain grass could be harvested and their eds planted for richer yields the next ason, the first step in a new association of plants and humans was taken. Grains were discovered and from them flowed the marvel of agriculture; cultivated crops. From then on, humans would increasingly take their living from the controlled production of a few plants, rather than getting a little here and a little there from many varieties that grew wild—and the accumulated knowledge of tens of thousands of years of experience and intimacy with plants in the wild would begin to fade away. 36. Which of the following assumptions about early humans is expresd in the passage? A. They divided knowledge into veral fields. B. They probably had extensive knowledge of plants. C. They knew little about the environment they were living in. D. They invented the term “botany” but had no idea of what it was about. 37. The phra “properties of each” in paragraph 1 refers to the properties of ____. A. each tribe B. each jungle C. each plant D. each purpo 38. The author mentions “a ro, an apple, or an orchid” in paragraph 2 to ____ . Rearch is unable to keep up with the increasing number of plants. D. Direct contact with a variety of plants has decread. 40. According to the passage, what was the first great step taken toward agriculture? A. The invention of agricultural machinery. 刻舟求剑翻译B. The production of a controlled number of plants. C. The discovery of certain grass that could be harvested and replanted. D. The clo relationship between human beings and plants. Passage Three Cancer is feared by everyone. And this fear is reaching epidemic(流行性) proportions. Not the dia itlf — there is no such thing as a cancer epidemic. Except for lung cancer, mostly caud by cigarette smoking ,the incidence rates are leveling off, and in the ca of some kinds of cancer are decreasing. But the fear of cancer is catching, and the country stands at risk of an anxiety, the earth itlf is coming to em like a huge carcinogen(致癌物). The ordinary, more or less scientific statement that something between 80 and 90 percent of all cancers are dun to things in the environment is taken to mean that none of us will be safe until the whole environment is “cleaned up.” This is not at all the meaning. The 80-percent calculation is bad on the unthinkable differences in the incidence of cancer in various societies around the world — for example, the high proportion of liver cancer in Africa and the Far East, stomach cancer in Japan, breast cancer in Western Europe and North America, and the relatively low figures for breast cancer in Japan and parts of Africa and for liver cancer in America. The data indicate there may be special and specific environmental influences, largely bad on personal life-style, that determine the incidence of various forms of cancer in different communities — but that is all the data suggest. The overall incidence of cancer, counting up all the cas, is probable roughly the same everywhere. 41.Which of the following is clost to meaning to the phra “leveling off”? A. Became very popular B. Reached its lowest level in popularity C. Stopped being popular D. Stopped increasing its popularity 42. According to the passage, the incidence of cancer is generally believed _____. Cancer and its Investigation strengths Passage Four The ca for college has been accepted without question for more than a generation. All high school graduates ought to go,says conventional wisdom and statistical evidence, becau college will help them earn more money, become “better” people, and learn to be more responsible citizens than tho who don‘t go. But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone. And now that clo to half our high school graduates are attending, tho who don‘t fit the pattern are becoming more numerous, and more obvious. College graduates are lling shoes and driving taxis;college students interfere with each other’s experiments and write fal letters of recommendation in the inten competition for admission to graduate school. Other find no stimulation in their studies, and drop out—often encouraged by college administrators. Some obrvers say the fault is with the young people themlves—they are spoiled and they are expecting too much. But that is a condemnation of the students as a whole, and doesn’t explain all campus unhappiness. Others blame the state of the world, and they are partly right. We have been told that young people have to go to college becau our economy can’t absorb an army of untrained eighteen-year-olds. But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no longer absorb an army of trained twenty-two-year-olds, either. Some adventuresome educators and watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may not be the best, the proper, the only place for every young person after the completion of high school. We may have been looking at all tho surveys and statistics upside down, it ems,and through the rosy glow of our own remembered college experiences. Perhaps college doesn’t make people intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal,or quick to learn things—may it is just the other way around, and intelligent,ambitious,happy,liberal,quick-learning people are merely the ones who have been attracted to college in the first place. And perhaps all tho successful college graduates would have been successful whether they had gone to college or not. This is heresy to tho of us who have been brought up to believe that if a little schooling is good, more has to be much better. But contrary evidence is beginning to mount up. 46.According to the author, ___. A. people ud to question the value of college education. B. people ud to have full confidence in higher education. C. all high school graduates went to college. D. very few high school graduates cho to go to college. 47.In the 2nd paragraph,“tho who don’t fit the pattern” refer to___. D. high school graduates who failed to be admitted to college. 48.The dropout rate of college students ems to go up becau___. A. young people are disappointed with the conventional way of teaching at college. B. many people are required to join the army. C. young people have little motivation in pursuing a higher education. D. young people don’t like the inten competition for admission to graduate school. 49.According to the passage, the problems of college education partly originate in the fact that___. A. society cannot provide enough jobs for properly trained graduates. B. High school graduates do not fit the pattern of college education. C. Too many students have to earn their own living. D. College administrators encourage students to drop out. 50. In this passage the author argues that___. A. more and more evidence shows college education may not be the best thing for high school graduates. B. College education is not enough if one wants to be successful. C. College education benefits only the intelligent, ambitious, and quick-learning people. D. Intelligent people may learn quicker if they don’t go to college. Passage Five Lead deposits, which accumulated in soil and snow during the 1960's and 70's, were primarily the result of leaded gasoline emissions originating in the United States. In the twenty years that the Clean Air Act has mandated unleaded gas u in the United States, the lead accumulation world-wide has decread significantly. A study published recently in the journal Nature shows that air-borne leaded gas emissions from the United States were the leading contributor to the high concentration of lead in the snow in Greenland. The new study is a result of the continued rearch led by Dr. Charles Boutron, an expert on the impact of heavy metals on the environment at the National Center for Scientific Rearch in France. A study by Dr. Boutron published in 1991 showed that lead levels in arctic ( 北极的 ) snow were declining. In his new study, Dr. Boutron found the ratios of the different forms of lead in the leaded gasoline ud in the United States were different from the ratios of European, Asian and Canadian gasolines and thus enabled scientists to differentiate ( 分区 ) the lead sources. The dominant lead ratio found in Greenland snow matched that found in gasoline from the United States . In a study published in the journal Ambio, scientists found that lead levels in soil in the North-eastern United States had decread markedly since the introduction of unleaded gasoline. Many scientists had believed that the lead would stay in soil and snow for a longer period. The authors of the Ambio study examined samples of the upper layers of soil taken from the same sites of 30 forest floors in New England, New York and Pennsylvania in 1980 and in 1990. The forest environment procesd and redistributed the lead faster than the scientists had expected. Scientists say both studies demonstrate that certain parts of the ecosystem ( 生态系统 ) respond rapidly to reductions in atmospheric pollution, but that the findings should not be ud as a licen to pollute. 51. The study published in the journal Nature indicates that ______ A.the Clean Air Act has not produced the desired results B.lead deposits in arctic snow are on the increa C.lead will stay in soil and snow longer than expected D.the US is the major source of lead pollution in arctic snow 52. Lead accumulation worldwide decread significantly after the u of unleaded gas in the US _____ A.was discouraged B.was enforced by law C.was prohibited by law D.was introduced 53. How did scientists discover the source of lead pollution in Greenland ? A.By analyzing the data published in journals like Nature and Ambio. B.By obrving the lead accumulations in different parts of the arctic area. C.By studying the chemical elements of soil and snow in Northeastern America. D.By comparing the chemical compositions of leaded gasoline ud in various countries. 54. The authors of the Ambio study have found that ______ A.forests get rid of lead pollution faster than expected B.lead accumulations in forests are more difficult to deal with C.lead deposits are widely distributed in the forests of the US D.the upper layers of soil in forests are easily polluted by lead emissions 55. The expectations give little comfort to social critics. Friendship appears to be a unique form of individual bonding.
