As overas retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Carrefour SA are making notable forays into China, they are warmly welcomed by a government which, in this industry at least, shows few protectionist proclivities.
One major reason for this welcoming attitude is that the foreign retailers, despite their lofty ambitions and deep pockets, remain minor players in a giant market where 1.3 billion people are learning the joys of mass consumption.
