Family is sometimes believed to have a profound impact on the development of children, ranging from character to habits. I agree with this view, although some people think environmental factors can sometimes make a bigger difference.

Many people argue that parents play the most significant role in their children’s development becau adults lead by example and their behavior can shape their children’s. Parents act as first educators, and children tend to assume that the behavior of adults is normally acceptable. For example, children tend to behave in the same ways as their parents in terms of ways of living, styles of communication and the ways to get along well with others. In contrast, other factors outside the family, such as friends and the media, are less influential, especially for preschool children, as the exposure to the factors is limited.

On the other hand, opponents believe that other external factors can make a stronger impact on younger generations as the factors can affect lf-esteem, social life and the n of identity. As they grow older, they will gradually realize they have numerous attributes similar to their peers and young characters of films; they tend to copy the behavior of their friends in order to adapt to the group they belong to. They may have the same preferences for dress, music and celebrities as their classmates do, and show similar behaviours, such as playing video games.

In my view, parenting can override the influence of media and friends in a child’s development as parental guidance and intervention can shape children’s behavior. This can be achieved by punishment or rewards. For example, parents can provide gifts to reward good habits or impo sanctions to discourage poor behaviours, such as watching films that have acts of violence, listening to songs that u foul language, and mixing with delinquent peers. The examples illustrate how parents can determine the extent to which their children are influenced by extrinsic factors.
