out of question与out of the question
这一对片语仅差一字之微，涵义却大相径庭。
Out of question的意思是“毫无疑问”，它是副词性短语，修饰谓语动词或整个句子。其义相当于beyond question，beyond doubt。例：
The general trend of the situation in Bosnia is out of question，developing in a direction more favourable to peace．
毫无疑问，波斯尼亚形势的总趋势是朝着更加有利于和平的方向发展。
The sabotage is out of question a fresh blow to international peace efforts．
那次阴谋破坏无疑对国际和平努力又是一个新的打击。
Out of the question的意思是“毫无可能”、“根本不必讨论”。它是形容词性短语，用作verb “to be”的补语。例：
Asking a mir to donate to charity is out of the question．
要求一个守财奴为慈善捐献是完全不可能的。
Without the participation of ten thousand workers，completion of such a mammoth undertaking in so short a period would be out of the question．

outdoor，outdoors，out of doors。
这三个词的意义完全不同，都表示“户外”之意，但使用场合有所不同。
Outdoor是形容词，如outdoor exerci、outdoor life、outdoor hospitals，它只能作定语形容词用。其对语是indoor。例：
You had better do some outdoor exercis every day.
你最好每天做一些户外运动。
Outdoors是名词和副词。其对语是indoors。例：
I love the great outdoors．
我热爱大自然／野外。
It's cold outdoors.
外面很冷。
out of doors等于。outdoors，作副词用，它们可互换使用。如：
They spend most of their time out of doors．
他们大部分的时间是在户外过的。
pay，salary，stipend，wage
这四个词是同义词，都有“工资”、“薪水”之义，但涵义和使用场合有所不同。
在这四个字中，pay是最一般的用语，常可代替其他三个词。但pay也有其专用的场合，它特指军队里的“薪饷”。例：
Farm labourers receive poor pay.

Wage一般用以指按小时或按日计酬的工资，它发给的对象是蓝领阶级，即工厂或码头等地的工人。此字常用复数形式，尤其指个人收入的时候。例：

The government intends to t a minimum wage well above the poverty line．

在古英语中，wages（复数形式当单数用）作“报应”或“代价”解。如：

peaceful与peaceable
这两个词都是peace的派生形容词，它们又都（表示）“和平的”、“安静的”（涵义），但涵义和使用场合有所不同。
Peaceful是专指环境和状态而言，其涵义为“平安的”、“和平的”、“宁静的”、“平静的”。例：
We earnestly hope that all countries will adhere to the principles of peaceful coexistence．
我们真诚地希望世界各国都能坚持和平共处的原则。
In breaking up strikes，we prefer peaceful measure to coercion.
要制止罢工，我们最好使用和平的方式而不要采用强制的方法。

Peaceable专指人的性格和气质而言，它的涵义是“爱好和平的”、“不爱争吵的”、“喜爱安静的”。例：
The old woman has a peaceable temper．
这个老妇的脾气温和。
Her husband is a peaceable man。
她的丈夫是个平和的人。
The inhabitants in Switzerland are peaceable citizens．
瑞士的居民都是爱好和平的人。

这两个词都是penny（便士）的复数形式，但涵义和使用场合并不相同。
（一） pence指数额而言； pennies指一个个具体的硬币。
（二）在英国，penny是“便士”，等于0.01英镑，一九七一年二月十五日以前，一便士=1／12先令=1／240英镑；在美国，penny是“一分币（a cent）。penny 的比喻义指很少或微不足道的数目，所以“Not a penny．”指一点也没有。
请看数例：
Twenty－four old pence is equal to two shillings
二十四旧便士等于二先令。
It cost two shillings eight pence．
它的售价是二先令八便士。
Plea give me six pennies.

请注意penny和pennies在下列词语的涵义：

In for a penny，in for a pound．一不做，二不休。

Penny的读音也是值得注意的。twopence读／'t)p+ns／； twopenny读／'t)p+ni／。
表示数额时，从二便士到十一便士，要将数目字和pence连写，例如twoepence、threepence、fourpence等。此外，还有一个“二十便士”也要连写： twentypence，其他则分写。例如twelvepence、thirteen pence……。
Threepence读作／'Irep+ns／，也可以读作／Irip+ns／；threepenny也是如此，但halfpence和halfpenny却只可以读作／'heip+ns和／'heip+ni／。也许是penny太不值钱了，难怪英美人都说：“／'heip+ni／”，谐音“hate penny”，这是笔者说的笑话，请莫当真。

这两个词都是名词，又都表示“诗”的涵义，但使用场合并不相同。
Poem是可数名词，可以有复数形式，其后可以加-s。poetry是不可数名词，诗的集合名称，没有复数形式，其后不可加-s。a poem就是a piece poetry。
