Amy Tan, the American-born daughter of Chine immigrants, received the Commonwealth Club Gold Award in 1989 for her first work of novel, the best-lling Joy Luck Club. Tan's parents, like many immigrants, had high expectations for their children and often t confusing standards, expecting Amy and her two brothers to think like Chine but to speak perfect English, excellent at school, and take advantage of every chance that might lead to success. Tan, however, rebelled against her parents' expectations, which included such respected professions as neurosurgery, and devoted herlf to being thoroughly American and dreaming of being a novelist.
Tan got a bachelor's degree in English and linguistics and a master's degree in linguistics and finally established herlf as a highly successful business writer. Tan, however, was not satisfied in spite of her material success. Turning to her life-long dream, she wrote her first short story, "Endgame," and then a cond, "Waiting between the Trees." er, a trip that proved to be a turning point in her life and career. Tan felt a n of completeness, a link with the country and its culture that she had never expected. Returning from China, Tan was surprid to learn that on the strength of her short stories she had received an advance from a publisher. Tan clod her business and wrote the remaining stories for the Joy Luck Club. It was a resounding success, well received by the critics and appearing on the New York Times bestller list. It has been translated into 17 languages, including Chine, and was made into a movie in 1993.

Britain has laws to make sure that women have the same chances as men in education, jobs and training. But it’s still unusual to find women doing dirty or heavy jobs.
Nikki Henriques is a car maintenance engineer in London. She ud to be a cretary. B arty Philips, a journalist with “The Obrver”, a Sunday newspaper, asked her why she wanted to work with cars.

Ro joined a women’s building co-operative, and she learnt her job from other people and from experience. However, many of the women in her group have been specially trained. Most of the jobs they do are improvements to buildings and general repairs.
“People often say, ‘Oh, women aren’t strong enough,’ but I don’t think strength is important.” said Ro, “The important thing is to get ud to doing a different sort of work.”
Ro would like more women to come into the building industry. “Everything built at the moment is a product of man’s world. If women become builders, they will be able to understand the production of their hou and their towns.”

Things you need to know about studying there
Study style
Since the 1950s, the Netherlands has had cours in English especially for foreign students. Students are expected to be critical of what they read and hear, and to be able of working independently. Foreign students will soon notice that at Dutch institutions for higher learning people
are expected to do a lot of talking.
