Thomas Jefferson was inaugurated on March 4, 1801. He was the first President to take the oath of office in the nation’s permanent capital, Washington D.C. One famous sunken ship is the “Lusitania”, which sank off the southern coast of Ireland in 1915 with a loss of nearly 1500 lives. It had four huge propellers made of an expensive metal. Today each of tho propellers is worth $300,000 or more. The ship, lying on the a-bed, has been bought by a man called John Ligh. He paid about $12,000 for the whole ship. He hopes to bring up tho propellers and ll them. He also hopes to ll ot
her parts of the ship, when he has brought them to the surface, for about $600,000.
The “Andria Doria”is another valuable ship lying on the a-bed. It is an Italian pasnger ship which sank in 1956 after a collision with a Swedish ship. The ship itlf is worth at least $30,000,000 and in addition she was carrying over $ 4,800,000 in money and many other valuable things. There is one silver object which is worth over $ 1,200,000. But the ship is lying in deep water which is very dark and cold. A strong current also sweeps past the ship and so far divers have been unsuccessful.
