In 1842 he established his name as a poet with the publication of Dramatic Lyrics, containing such
poems as 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin' and 'My Last Duchess'. Dramatic Romances and Lyrics (1845), which included 'Home Thoughts from Abroad', built on this success. In 1846 he eloped to Italy with Elizabeth Barrett, and a highly creative period followed: Men and Women (1855) and The Ring and the Book (1868-9), a ries of dramatic monologues, were among the important works completed during this time.
William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863)
All of his novels originally appeared in rial form; he established his reputation with Vanity Fair (1847-8), a vivid portrayal of early 19th-century society, satirizing upper-middle class pretensions through its central character Becky Sharp. Later novels include Pendennis (1848-50), The History of Henry Esmond (1852), and The Virginians (1857-9).
