A. Summary: Its thesis is stated by the title “Loving and Hating New York”, or more specifically and explicitly, by the first ntence of the last paragraph, “Loving and hating New York becomes a matter of alternating moods, often in the same day.” Tho ad campaigns celebrating the Big Apple and tho “I love New York” T-shirts imply that New York has lost its former status as the top city in America. It is no longer the leader in fashi
on. Its deficiencies as a pacetter are more and more evident in such fields as architecture, music sports, etc. in terms of tourism and living conditions, it rates low too. However, many Europeans call New York their favorite becau they like its cosmopolitan complexities, its charged, nervous atmosphere and its vulgar dynamism. The writer express that he loves it more than any other el. The city and the life there have a ries of characteristics, which, according to the writer, can be lovable and hatable at the same time. Nature’s pleasures are very limited there. People compete vigorously to win in their life and to make the best of their talents. There are rigorous judgments, impersonal commercialism, loneliness as well as freedom. But eing all the faults of the city, a New Yorker, or rather the writer himlf still prefers to live here, becau he loves its vitality, rawness and tension and he loves the congested, democratic prence of New Yorkers, encad in their own worlds.
