Simile(明喻)
Simile译作“明喻”,顾名思义它是就两个不同类对象之间的相似之处进行比喻。明喻把打比喻的两者说成是相似的,而暗喻则将两者说成一致。同时,明喻的整个句子结构中含有本体、喻体和比喻词。明喻中常用的比喻词有:like,as…as,as if,similar to等等,此外,比较级结构也可构成明喻。
Tommy runs swiftly as a rabbit. (汤米跑得像兔子一样快。)
Metaphor(暗喻)

Metaphor译作“暗喻”,也称作为“隐喻”,与明喻一样,它也是就两个不同类对象之间的相似之处进行比喻,整个句子结构中含有本体(subject/tenor)和喻体(reference/vehicle),而比
喻词则不出现。本体指被比喻的对象,喻体指用来做比喻的对象,而在暗喻中被省略的比喻词则在本体和喻体之间起连接介绍作用。当然,也有暗喻句子,省略本体只出现喻体,我们需根据上下文体会其中的含义。
Ex.1 将下列句子改写成为含暗喻修辞的句子:
1) A true friend is like a mirror helping you e any dirt on your face. (一个真正的朋友就像一面镜子,帮你看到脸上哪怕一丝的灰尘。)
2) Mr. Smith is like a wolf in sheep's skin.(史密斯先生就像一只披着羊皮的狼。)

Personification(拟人)
Personification译作“拟人”,是把非人的事物当作人来描绘,而不是将某物比作人。它上那把本来用于人的动词、形容词、名词或代词用来描述大自然其他有生命的或无生命的东西,使其具有人的思想、活动或其他特征。
拟人修辞手法常被用来借物寓情,把人的喜怒哀乐传达到所描写的对象中,从而起到烘托人物思想感情的作用。拟人手法也可将抽象的概念具体化,更形象直观地表达思想。
例: After the successful interview,she left the company light-heartedly. The gate smiled after her and the sun stretched out its arms to greet her.(借物喻情)

Metonymy(转喻)
Metonymy译作“转喻”,它借某一事物密切相关的东西来表示该事物,相当于汉语的修辞中的借代。在说明或描绘时,不直接说明所指事物的名称,而用某种替代形式。
在转喻的修辞中,我们用某物A来指代某物B,其中事物A和B之间有着密切的联系。
例: The pen is mightier than the sword.文章比武器更强大。(作家比武士更强大。)
该句中就采用了转喻的手法,用工具来代替使用工具的人或人所创造的东西,pen替代作家或文章,而sword替代武士或武器。
通常情况下,转喻修辞法可用地名指那里的人们;用盛某物的容器指容器里装的东西;用工具或所有物指常使用该工具的人或该物的所有者。也有借用历史上的故事或典故来暗示说话的观点,达到借古喻今。在新闻报道中,人们也常用转喻的形式称呼各类人或事物,给人以幽默而深刻的印象,同时达到简洁的效果。

Synecdoche(提喻)
Synecdoche译作“提喻”,即不直接说出所指对象的名称,而采取某种替代形式。其表达方式通常为:用一个事物的局部来表示整体,或以整体表示局部;用抽象和具体的概念进行互为替代;单数和复数进行互代;用生产用的原料替代产成品。
例: She has got five mouths to feed.她得养活五口人。
以局部替代整体,mouth(嘴巴)表示吃饭的人。

Euphemism(委婉/ 婉言)
bedlamEuphemism译作“委婉”,它是以语气较温和,含义较文雅或模糊的词语来代替粗俗、生硬、直露的说法,其目的是为了避讳、礼貌,让人听上去容易接受。例如不直接说某人死了(died),而说某人去世了(pasd away),不直说上厕所(go to the lavatory),而称之为去洗手间(go to the bathroom)。
委婉的表达方式有多种,可体现在语法、构词、变通表达等方面。
语法上常以过去式、情态动词等表示委婉语。如:I was wondering if you could have time to read my thesis.
承诺的英文构词上常用缩略形式表达。如:用Ladies表示ladies' room,W.C. 指代water clot。
变通表达是最常用的委婉语表达方式,根据场合,采用淡化、美化的语言。如:用nior c
itizen 代替old people。不直接说某人笨(stupid),而说反应不快(a bit slow for his age)。

Irony(反语)
Irony译作“反语”,即说反话,用同本意相反的词语来表达本意。这种修辞手法,无论目的如何,其所有的用法都有一个共同点:字面上表达的意思与实际上真正的意思正好相反。
