Sum up:
when引导的定语从句修饰表示时间的名词，并在定语从句中作时间状语，相当于“介词+关系代词(which)”。
where引导的定语从句修饰表示地点的名词，并在定语从句中作地点状语, 相当于“介词+ 关系代词(which)”。

注意：The place ____ we visited yesterday is a school for disabled children. (先行词在从句中作宾语用which, that或省略)

关系副词：when, where, why.
关系副词可代替的先行词是时间，地点或理由的名词，在从句中作状语，相当于“介词+which”结构，经常交替使用。
先行词在定语从句中的不同成分, 引导词不同:
a. This is the place where he works.
This is the place which (that) we visited last year.
b. That was the time when he arrived.
Do you still remember the days that (which) we spent together?
