Students at Bullock Creek High School in Midland, Michigan found an unusual way to rai money for their robotics team.
Every year, 28 students on the Blitz Creek team take part in a national robotics competition, corporateculture
where students are challenged to create a robot that can perform certain tasks.
They design robots, build them, and write the programs that run them.
But building robots isn’t cheap. Maxton Herst joined the team in the ninth grade, and later he became the captain of the robotics team. By accident, Maxton Herst saw a video about a toilet paper pyramid. Maxton realized that it was possible to build a record-tting pyramid, and then ll the toilet paper to get money for their program. All the team members agreed to try his idea.
Blitz Creek has been planning the pyramid since last May. One challenge was calculating(计算) how many rolls of paper were needed. The answer turned out to be 27,434.
In late December, team members gave up part of their winter holiday to build the pyramid. The pyramid was so big that they had to build it from the inside before backing out and filling in the areas where they had been standing. It took about 16 hours, with ma
ny people working, to complete the pyramid. The final height of the pyramid was 4.95 meters tall, which is about 61 centimeters taller than the current (当前的) Guinness World Record.
The pyramid opened for viewing on January 4, 2020. Sadly, becau the pyramid was in the school’s front hall, it could only stay for three days. With all the excitement caud by the pyramid, it turned out to be fairly easy to ll the toilet paper. Many supporters did help. Families and teachers bought half of the paper. A large company bought the rest. The team made about $10,000 from the event, which will help pay for its activities.
Maxton talks about the success of his crazy idea. “If you’ve got an idea, and
you know that this idea is good, push it,” he says. “Don’t stop.”

Hope for Tigers
In 2010, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) brought bad news that the world tiger population had hit an all-time low. There were just 3,200 tigers left in the wild, about half as many as there had been ten years before.
Now there’s good news: Tigers could be making a comeback. There were about 4,000 tigers in the world in 2019. In July, India, which has 70% of the world’s tiger, announced(宣布) that its tiger population had reached nearly 3,000. That’s a 30% ri in just four years.
home for the holidaysIndia’s success was years in the making. In 2006, habitat(栖息地) loss made the number of India’s tigers reduce to only 1,411. So the Indian government decided to take a stronger plan of protection. Since its Wildlife Protection Act became law, India has given tigers a high level of protection.
Also, India’s latest tiger amount was the work of thousands of scientists. They covered 15
0,000 square miles of tiger habitat, using thousands of cameras to record the animal’s movements. With the help of their rearch, India created 50 rerves(保护区), where tigers can spread out and hunt(捕猎).
It’s when the big cats move away from the rerves that trouble starts. “When tigers leave protected rerves, they often run into local people. We cannot save wildlife without the cooperation of the people.” says wildlife expert Shari Rodriguez. Therefore, India’s government has been moving villages away from rerves. “In India, there is a lot of national pride in tigers. They are India’s biggest attraction. Villagers benefit from jobs in the national parks or from lling art works to tourists.”
But challenges remain for tigers all over Asia. They are hunted for their skin, and their teeth are sold as medicine. “They’re still in danger,” Rodriguez says. She draws hope from India’s success, “This is a small, small victory in a long war against dying out.”
34. How many tigers were there in the world in 2019?
