Sun Tzu said: The art of war is of vital importa nee to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no acco unt be n eglected.
The art of war, the n, is gover ned by five con sta nt factors, to be take n into acco unt in on e's deliberatio ns, whe n ek ing to determ ine the con diti ons obta ining in the field. The are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heave n; (3) Earth; (4) The Comma nder; (5) Method and

The five heads should be familiar to every gen eral: he who knows them will be victorious; he who knows them not will fail.
Therefore, in your deliberati ons, whe n ek ing to determ ine the military con diti on s, let them be made the basis of a comparis on, in this wi:--

All warfare is bad on decepti on.
Hen ce, whe n able to attack, we must em un able; whe n using our forces, we must em in active; whe n we are n ear, we must make the en emy believe we are far away; whe n far away, we must make him believe we are n ear.

If your opp onent is of choleric temper, ek to irritate him. Prete nd to be weak, that he may grow arroga nt.
If he is tak ing his ea, give him no rest. If his forces are un ited, parate them.

The military devices, lead ing to victory, must not be divulged beforeha nd.
Now the gen eral who wins a battle makes many calculati ons in his temple where the battle is fought. The gen eral who los a battle makes but few calculati ons beforeha nd. Thus do many calculati ons lead to victory, and few calculati ons to defeat: how much more no calculati on at all! It is by atte ntio n to this point that I can foree who is likely to win or lo.
