The Formation and Root of the Dirges Custom

Abstract:The question of whether the bereavement can be sang or not has not been solved in the the Pre-Qin Period until the Jin dynasty.The advocates argue that the tone of the dirge is in tune with the funeral.The opponents,however,hold that the dirge is contrary to the Rites of Zhou.The two sides finally came to an accommodation.After that,the so -called "Bite twigs"develops in parallel with the "Dirges";The root of dirges can be traced back to the ancient "protect corp"custom,only making sounds and shooting an arrow can drive the birds away,and later it has been ud not only to notify neighbor and relatives,but also help to stand as guards at the bier.In the long process of communication of dirges,the function,time,content and rhetoric of dirges have experienced obvious changes due to some factors,such as age,nationality,policy,social psychology,aesthetic taste.

调哀切与葬仪符合,反对者却认为丧歌大声与周礼相违。结果是双方和解,所谓“衔枚”与“挽歌”并行;丧为何歌的根源则可追溯到远古的“护尸”习俗,只有发声、扣弓才能达到驱禽的目的,后来演变为唱丧歌发声还能通知邻居亲戚等家有丧事,也能帮助丧家守灵、消寞等;而且,在丧歌漫长的传播过程中,由于时代、民族,政策、社会心理、审美趣味等的因素也导致其在功能、时间、内容、修辞等方面发生了明显的变化。
