千万别喊老外“foreigner”，真的很不礼貌！
说到外国人，很多同学想到的第一个单词可能是“foreigner”，但这个词得慎用，因为用foreigner称呼老外的时候，其实这个词里暗含了一定的排外情绪。来看看牛津词典的解释：
It can sometimes sound slightly rude to call somebody ’a foreigner’. You can say that a person is from overas, or say why they are in a place by using a term such as exchange student, business traveller or tourist.
称呼某人为“a foreigner”有时听起来比较粗鲁。你可以说某人来自海外，或者说明他来此地的身份，比如交换生，商务旅客，又或者游客。
既然用foreigner称呼外国人不礼貌，除了上面词典给出的几个例子，还可以怎么说？
1. 直接说明对方来自哪个国家，或者哪国人。
She is American.
2. 外籍人士：expat，等同于expatriate
She can’t wait to live abroad and work as an expat.
她迫不及待地想要去国外生活、工作。
“外国语大学”英文怎么说？
虽然外语是foreign language，但“外国语大学”可别直译为“Foreign Languages University”？！
因为外国语大学不仅设有外语学科，还有其他学科。如果英文名使用Foreign Languages，多少有点狭义。
来看看国内一些外国语大学的英文名：
北京外国语大学
Beijing Foreign Studies University
上海外国语大学
Shanghai International Studies University
西安外国语大学
Xi’an International Studies University
四川外国语大学
Sichuan International Studies University
这几所大学都用了“studies”，study作为复数studies时指（大学里的）学科或学业。所以可以用International Studies University或Foreign Studies University来表达“外国语大学”。

语言学是研究语言的一门学科。

外语学院呢？
“外语学院”，是大学下属学院，英文表达是：foreign languages college；school of foreign languages
这里用到了“school”，school除了表示普通的学校，还可以表示“（大学的）学院”：
英文释义：a department or group of departments that teaches a particular subject at a university（朗文辞典）
law school 法学院
medical school 医学院
外交学院呢？
外交学院是以服务中国外交事业为宗旨，培养一流外交外事人才的小规模、高层次、特色鲜明的外交部唯一直属高校。其英文名是：China Foreign Affairs University
