North of town there’s a brand-spanking new muum dedicated to the Liangzhu Culture,the last Neolithic jade culture in the Yangtze River Delta.This muum,which opened in October of 2008,features a stylish building and sleek,modern exhibits on all aspects of the life of the Liangzhu people who lived 5,000 years ago.The first exhibition hall describes this fascinating culture,starting with its rediscovery in 1936 when Shi Xingeng unearthed the first shards of black pottery.
Over time,archaeologists discovered that the Liangzhu culture reached into prent day Jiangsu,Zhejiang,and Shanghai.This culture is known for the jade ware they left behind.Two of their reprentative shapes are bi(discs)and cong(cylinders).Bi were ud to make offerings to heaven,while cong were ud to make offerings to the earth.You can also learn some interesting things about their capital city and their burial customs.
But this place has more to offer than the average stuffy muum.The cond exhibition hall takes you back through time to a realistic forest where models of the Liangzhu peopl

ith their daily activities,such as making pottery,carving jade,fishing,cooking,and building hous.It has an entirely different feeling from the first hall and is a nice change of pace.This part of the muum is very child-friendly as well,with a special room full of interactive activities to educate and entertain.And throughout,there are extensive English translations for your perusal.Another special feature of this muum is the building itlf.It was designed by British architect David Chipperfield.In between the exhibition halls,there are interior courtyards where you can relax and enjoy the weather and the architecture.The muum is built over a lake and t in a large park.
If you have a free day,this muum is a nice little trip out of town—not too far,but not in the city either.However,don’t confu the Liangzhu Muum with the old Liangzhu Culture Muum,which is no longer open to the public.(If you get off too soon,it’s a 2 kilometer walk.)The nearest bus stop to the Liangzhu Muum is Lianghuaat the edge of the park.It can be reached by bus 313 or 348.
