SENTENCE PROBLEMS IN WRITING

Sentence fragments are incomplete ntences or parts of ntences. Remember that in order to be complete, a ntence must contain (a) at least one main or independent clau, and/or (b) contain at least one main subject and one main verb.
Study the following four examples of ntence fragments and the suggested methods for correcting them.
Fragments
1. Becau some students have part-time jobs in addition to going to school.
2. For example, the increa in the cost of renting an apartment.
3. Having no money and being lonely in the big city.

Problem: This is a subordinate clau.
To correct: Attach it to an independent clau.
Complete Sentence:

Complete ntence:

Complete ntences:

Problem: This is a subordinate (adjective) clau.
To correct: Rewrite the clau by eliminating the adjective clau aspect.
Complete ntence:
Many people get married before they are mature enough.

Read the following ntences. Mark them FRAG if they are ntence fragments, or Sent if they are complete ntences. Rewrite each fragment to make complete ntences.
1. The desire of all mankind to live in peace and freedom, for example.

WRITING PRACTICE
Read the following short essay. Put brackets [ ] around any ntence fragments that you find and mark them FRAG. Then correct all fragments. Rewrite the entire essay.
Women Drivers
Male chauvinism extends even into the area of automobile driving, it ems. Believing that they are far better drivers than women. Men consider women drivers incompetent, inattentive, and even dangerous behind the wheel.
However, statistics prove that women are, in fact, safer drivers than men. For example, insurance rates. Insurance rates for women are 20% lower than for men. Choppy Sentences
Choppy ntences are ntences that are too short. They are the result of using too many simple ntences, like tho that follow. Although simple ntences are quite effective sometimes, overu of them is considered poor style in academic writing.ttip
