September 2012 Major Update of Management Engine (ME) Firmware on HP Z820 Workstations Introduction: This mini-whitepaper describes the procedure to update Intel Management Engine (ME) Firmware (FW) on HP Z820 Workstations. This special procedure is only required for major ME FW updates from Version 7 to Version 8 or vice versa. This procedure can only be performed with System BIOS Version 02.00 or later. Minor ME FW updates (within Version 7 or within Version 8) can be performed through normal ME FW upgrade procedures and with any BIOS Version.

ME Firmware Update Steps:

In order to perform a major update of the ME firmware, ur must disable ME Firmware protection through the u of the FDO jumper. In order to access the jumper, ur must remove the PCI air duct cover and possibly some PCI cards and

cables. Plea verify the jumper location visually before removing any PCI cards or cables. There are 3 possible locations of the FDO jumper on the system motherboard as shown below:
