41. Advertising is a form of lling. It makes you want to buy a product or a rvice. In order to attract your interest it us various approaches. One is the emotional approach. For example, consider an advertiment for a blanket. It is beautifully printed in full color. It shows a young woman looking dreamily at a pretty blanket. “To you a blanket is more than a source of warmth,” it says. “You need beauty as well as a good night’s sleep.” Looking at the advertiment, you may feel flattered. You may feel yourlf different from tho who buy blankets simply for warmth. And so you may want to have one yourlf. In the same way, a man may buy a certain make of car just becau he wants to impress his friends. This ems ridiculous, of cour, since people buy a car as a means of transportation. But there are many people who cretly feel that a certain car will give them prestige. To realize this, you have only to look at TV commercials in which nice-looking cars are shown together with people everyone admires. On the contrary, when a man buys a delivery truck for his business that is not the ca. Here he will not try to em important as he may when he buys a luxury car. What he has in mind is a truck that will do its job efficiently. Similarly, a woman buying a refrigerator will not be led by her emotions so easily. She wants to know such facts as how much food it can hold and whether the food is easy to reach. In such cas, advertising is generally straightforward. It gives you the facts about a product rather than an idea. Generally, advertiments u either the emotional or the rational approach, or a combination of the two. Advertising reflects our way of living. This is one reason why an American university has recently t up a place storing historical records for TV commercials that have been ud in the past. They will be uful in learning why people really behaved, thought, and acted as they did in the days when the commercials appeared on TV. [共5题] | (1) What does advertising ll? 42. A few years ago I was shopping with a friend and his 12-year-old daughter in downtown San Francisco. A street musician, whom my friend happened to know from his own musician days, was playing the saxophone (萨克斯管) on a street corner. His name was Clifford, and he had attracted a large crowd with his performance. After he finished, my friend introduced him to me and his daughter. Clifford asked her if she played any instrument. When she replied that she was taking trumpet (小号) lessons and played in her junior high school band, he said, “That is fine, little lady. Learn your instrument well and you can play anything.” Somehow the simple yet wi words struck me as appropriate not only for a trumpet player but also for a reader. If you learn to read well, you can read anything you want—not just newspapers and magazines, but more difficult material like philosophy, file criticism, military history—whatever interests you as your confidence grows. You would not be limited in any way. If you have the vocabulary—or at least a good dictionary near at hand—you can pick up a book, concentrate on it, and make n of the author's words. In the United States, reading instruction often ends at elementary school, so students sometimes have difficulty as they progress through school. They must take their assignments armed only with their elementary school reading skills. The result, too often, is frustration and loss of confidence. And the assigned reading in your college cours will be even greater than they were in high school. Developing Reading Skills is designed to accomplish veral tasks to show you the skills that will enable you to read with greater comprehension, to help you cope with reading assignments with confidence, and to teach you to become an active reader. 43. Advertiments make us want too much, so we get the idea that the only purpo of advertising is to ll goods. But it is not completely right. Advertiment has another equally important function—to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about houhold goods derives largely from the advertiments we read. Advertiments introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washer, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertiment. Lots of people pretend that they never read advertiments, but this claim may be riously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertiments the days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertiments. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only cloly printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertiment makes such a difference to a drab wall or a newspaper full of bad news. We must not forget that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist without this source of revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programs is due entirely to the money spent by advertirs. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price! Another thing we mustn’t forget is the ‘small ads.’ in virtually every newspaper and magazine. What a tremendously uful rvice they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through the columns. For instance, you can find a job; buy or ll a hou; announce a birth, marriage, or death in the small ads. [共5题] | (1) According to the passage, advertiments will NOT make us ____________. 44. Many visitors finds the fast pace at which American people move very troubling. One’s first impression is likely to be that everyone is in a rush.
