Scene 1: Joey and Topthorn ‘s mirable situation
J: Topthorn. I miss Emilie a lot.
T: Me too. But we have to accept the fact that we no longer have the protection of our Emilie to rely on.

Scene 2: Old Friedrich

T: I think he is not in the slightest bit mad. He is simply a kind and gentle man who nature cries out against fighting a war.

Scene 3: Death of Topthorn and Friedrich!
On an autumn day, we go to war again. As the war goes on, the soldiers appear to become younger. Topthorn is getting weak now. One day, Topthorn suddenly stumbles to his knees and do not get up again. Joey stops for a moment to give him time to get up, but he doesn’t. He lies where he is, breathing heavily and lifts his head to look at Joey. It is an appeal for help. Then he slumps forward on his face, rolls over and is quite still.

Suddenly the place is alive with shouting, rushing soldiers and the shells are falling around us everywhere. Friedrich tries to drags Joey away.
F: Hurry! Joey! Go to the shoulder of the hill! If you want to live, move now!
J: No! No! Topthorn is lying at my feet. I won’t abandon him. I won’t leave him. He is my best and dearest friend.
Friedrich tries to make his escape without Joey now, but it is too late. He is struck down only a few paces from Topthorn, rolls back down the hill and lies still beside him.
