In my first year in Beijing, I signed up for Chine language class at a community center. Every other day, I would be with other students reading from a Chine workbook, repeating the teacher’s words, taking down notes, practicing pronunciations. Learning a new language is like stepping into another person!
And then the pandemic (流行病) happened. In lockdown, and with no one to speak to, the few words I picked up disappeared from my consciousness (意识). But there are three words I’ve kept to memory “Ting bu dong”. I u it mostly with Didi drivers who ask me questions I truly do not understand. The driver would usually let out a laugher, repeat the phra with the correct Chine accent, and then drive quietly to my destination.
I have ud “Ting bu dong” on almost everyone and it’s been ud on me, too. There was a Chine boy in the neighborhood. I said, “Hello, how are you?” I heard him say, “Ting bu dong”. Hah! Shoe’s on the other foot, I thought, a laugh bubble forming in my head.
Sometimes I didn’t mean to come across as impolite. What I really wanted to say is: “Ting bu dong”, but plea speak slowly so I can understand you; I want to have a conversation
with you. Maybe we can be friends?
Truth be told, I don’t like saying “Ting bu dong” becau I enjoy chatting to taxi drivers. In New York City, the taxi drivers are such engaging storytellers, and some are really opinionated. They have their views on everything from politics to pizza.
I’m sure some Chine drivers also have inspiring stories they would love to share with strangers, except that language is a barrier that takes time to break down. Learning a cond language is said to be good exerci for the brain. Chine has given mine a high-intensity workout.

B.She only remembered “Ting bu dong” .
C.Chine words are really hard to remember.

6.What does the last but one paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Taxi drivers abilities of telling stories.
余风B.The special views on future studies.
C.The author’s reason for talking with taxi drivers.
D.The dislike of engaging storytellers.
7.What’s the author’s attitude towards her language learning?
A.Optimistic. B.Doubtful. C.Desperate. D.Critical.
Farmers in southern Italy are planting avocados and mangos. Tropical creatures such as the rabbitfish are turning up in Mediterranean nets. And Bordeaux winemakers fear that their Merlot grapes may become extinct. Fifty years ago all this would have been unthinkable. But since the early 1980s rising temperatures have forced some farmers to change grapes for passion fruit. Italy and France have long been proud of their cuisines. Both countries jealously guard the rules that say only ham made in Parma can be called “ Prosciutto di Parma”, and only fizzy wine made in Champagne can be called “Champagne Roquefort”.
