A Horman in the sky is a short story with the famous Civil War as its background. Though the story is noticeably short, it gives every reader a harsh impression, of cour, including me. In this story, there are only two main protagonists who make the story vivid and preci. In my paper, I would like to spare my efforts to give my brief analysis on the character of the protagonist: Carter Dru.
It’s a universally known fact that the kinship is the last thing people would like to lo. It’s a piece of jewelry that shines through everyone’s life. And there is no doubt that it should be valued and cherished by every one of us. However, Carter Dru, the son, killed his dad by his own hands. While reading the story, I can’t stop constantly asking mylf one question: Would you ever kill your father? What if he asks you to do it, or you are ordered to do that by a superior force? And what on earth can make a son kills his own father? Thinking of this, I think we should get to know a little bit more about the background of the story.
The story happened in the Civil War which caud great damage and anguish to the whole nation and its residents. The American Civil War (1861 - 1865) was one of the most violent times in the History of the United States. Many books have been written on all aspects of the Civil War. More than 600,000 men gave their lives for their country in this war. This is more lives lost in one war than in all wars and conflicts combined following this period in time. An influential conventional wisdom holds that civil wars proliferated rapidly with the end of the Cold War and that the root cau of many or most of the has been ethnic and religious antagonisms. We show that the current prevalence of internal war is mainly the result of a steady accumulation of protracted conflicts since the 1950s and 1960s rather than a sudden change associated with a new, post-Cold War international system. We also find that after controlling for per capita income, more ethnically or religiously diver countries have been no more likely to experience significant civil violence in this period. We argue for understanding civil war in this period in terms of insurgency or rural guerrilla warfare, a particular form of military practice that can be harnesd to diver political agendas. The factors that explain whic
h countries have been at risk for civil war are not their ethnic or religious characteristics but rather the conditions that favor insurgency. The include poverty—which marks financially and bureaucratically weak states and also favors rebel recruitment—political instability, rough terrain, and large populations. And the author was exactly the generation lived under the horrible shadow of the notorious Civil War.
In order to make a deeper and wider comprehension of this novel and its character, I would like to make a brief introduction of its author, Ambro Bierce五月的英文>电影院的英文 an American newspaper columnist, satirist, essayist, short-story writer, and novelist, an enigmatic figure, who disappeared in the Mexican Revolution. His end is still a mystery, but he is presumed to have died in the siege of Ojinega on 11 January 1914. Bierce is best-known for his numerous short stories collected in TALES OF SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS (1891), which show the influence of Edgar Allan Poe. However, Bierce himlf was annoyed by comparisons. As a literary critic he was against realism. After Stephen Crane published his famous novel about the Civil War, The Red Badge of Courage英语在线学习网站, Bierce wrote: "I had thought there could be only two wor writers than Stephen Crane, namely, 1653
two Stephen Cranes." During his lifetime, he was famous for his short novels, which depict a terrible and horrifying world and the poor people who suffered a lot from it. The latter part of his lifetime was pasd with sadness and boredom. Just becau of the special life experience the author had, had this wonderful novel came up.isdn是什么意思
Carter Dru, the hero of the novel, a normal peasant, was born in Virginia. He loved his parents, his home and the south and the peace. But most of all, he loved his country from his deep heart.. And in the autumn of eighteen sixty-one, when the United States was divided into two parts by a terrible civil war, Carter Dru, a southerner decided to join the Union Army of the north. What a brave decision did he make! I even can’t imagine how long time it took him to choo the peace of the whole country instead of the one of himlf. The incident described in "The Horman in the Sky" is by no means a rare occurrence in a civil war: two members of the same family, father and son, for example, fight for the opposite sides and the position requires that the one should save his cau or his comrades by killing the other.

kills his father. Carter Dru, the hero of the story ,is a credible character. When he finds out that the enemy soldier his gun is aiming at is his own father, he hesitates, and the hand holding the gun drops. However, he soon realizes the significance of the situation: should he let his father go, the five regiments of Union infantry would be wiped out. He understands that he cannot at once be a dedicated soldier to his army and a devoted son to his father. For the safety of his fellow soldiers and the success of their plan, he must shoot his father. He takes aim again, but this time his target is the hor. He fires. The bullets nds the hor, with his father on horback of cour, flying down to the bottom o the valley a thousand feet below.
Afterwards, he feels sad, but he does not regret having done what he did. He has lived up to his father's parting advice," Whatever may occur, do what you conceive to be your duty."
Carter Dru killed his dad, would you ever kill your father? What if he asks you to do it, or you are ordered to by a superior force? Private Carter Dru faces an immen dilemma, deciding whether he should kill his father or allow the Northern Army to be in je
opardy. Is duty more important than family blood? Carter Dru should not be condemned for killing his father; he should be praid for exhibiting courage by following his heart.
It takes a strong-headed man to do what Carter Dru did. Most of the world would have chon not to kill a member of his or her own family. What makes a man stoop so low and make such a horrid decision? Many different factors enter Carter’s mind as he decides his life’s most shattering decision. To Carter Dru his duty as a ntinel and scout is a vital factor in his decision. Carter felt a great devotion, loyalty and love for the Northern Army; a love so strong that he could not let his fellow soldiers and higher-ranking officers down. Carter’s father disowns Carter when he allows Carter to walk out of their hou and join the ranks of the Union Army, when he himlf was going to soon join to fight for the Confederate Army. Carter’s own father had earlier given him the order that would later take his life. He told Carter as Carter left that “Whatever may occur, do what you conceive to be your duty” (30). By the words Carter’s own father had made Carter’s decision, he put duty before blood. Carter’s bloodline is broken by this expressio
