三年前,我和妻子都厌倦了大城市生活的纷纷扰扰,决定定居在一个安静的小镇上,享受那里和谐的生活。我们非常喜欢在小镇上的生活,因为在这里靠步行很容易就可以干成任何事情。我经常四处溜达,而且心情好的时候,我会去星巴克要上一杯咖啡,或者去洲际戏院看上场戏。但是有人似乎理解不了我这种奇怪的做法。只要有可能,我都会尽量步行,这一点和他们大部人的做法完全不同,他们很多人的生活都完全依赖汽车。在我看来,他们的这种做法有时甚至有些愚蠢,因为即便步行十分钟就到他们也会选择车行。有时候,看到我一个人散步的时候,他们会问我要不要载我一程。不管别人的观点如何,我认为汽车实际就是对人的双腿宣判了死刑。由于在这个社会中,大部人的观点总是居主导地位,我于是意识到了我可能是认定以步行完成短途距离的唯一一人,这也就是为什么我的观点总是得不到别人的赞同的原因。比如说,很多商场要在顾客停车之前清扫空地,因为他们在意的是商业上的成功。
