三年前，我和妻子都厌倦了大城市生活的纷纷扰扰，决定定居在一个安静的小镇上，享受那里和谐的生活。我们非常喜欢在小镇上的生活，因为在这里靠步行很容易就可以干成任何事情。我经常四处溜达，而且心情好的时候，我会去星巴克要上一杯咖啡，或者去洲际戏院看上场戏。但是有人似乎理解不了我这种奇怪的做法。只要有可能，我都会尽量步行，这一点和他们大部人的做法完全不同，他们很多人的生活都完全依赖汽车。在我看来，他们的这种做法有时甚至有些愚蠢，因为即便步行十分钟就到他们也会选择车行。有时候，看到我一个人散步的时候，他们会问我要不要载我一程。不管别人的观点如何，我认为汽车实际就是对人的双腿宣判了死刑。由于在这个社会中，大部人的观点总是居主导地位，我于是意识到了我可能是认定以步行完成短途距离的唯一一人，这也就是为什么我的观点总是得不到别人的赞同的原因。比如说，很多商场要在顾客停车之前清扫空地，因为他们在意的是商业上的成功。
