eak,1613m），ＪadeＭaidenＰeak（ＭiddleＰeak,2042m），

ＳunriＰeak（ＥastＰeak,2100m），ＬotusＰeak（Ｗest

Ｐeak,2038m）andＬandingＷildＧooＰeak（ＳouthＰ

eak,2160m）。ＮorthＰeak,thelowestofthefive,isthe

startingpoint.Ｉthasthreewaysupit:thesixkilometer

climbingthemountaininthedarkasthereisnowheretostay

onthemountain）。

eak.ＨuashanmeansＦlowerＭountain,anditgotthename

fromＬotusＰeak,whichremblesabeautifullyblooming

thehighestamongthefivesummits.Ｔhepathtothesummit

ischaracterizedbysteeprockfaces,withobstacles

aoisttempleknownastheＳhrineoftheＷesternＰeak

locatedatitsba.Ｄaoistsbelievedthatinthemountain

livesagodoftheunderworld.Ｔhetempleatthefootof

themountainwasoftenudforspiritsmediumstocontact

thegodandhisunderlings.ＵnlikeＴaishan,（）whichbecame

apopularplaceofpilgrimage,Ｈuashanonlyreceivedlocal

pilgrms,andwasnotwellknowninmuchoftherestofＣ

hina.Ｈuashanwasalsoanimportantplaceforimmortality

ekers,aspowerfuldrugswerereputedtobefoundthere.

ＫouＱianzhi（365⑷48），thefounderoftheＮorthernＣ

elestialＭastersreceivedrevelationsthere,asdidＣhen

Ｔuan（920⑼89），wholivedonthemountainpriortoreceiving

immortality.Ｉnthe1230s,allthetemplesonthemountain

cameundercontroloftheＤaoistＱuanzhenＳchool.Ｉn

1998,themanagementcommitteeofＨuashanagreedtoturn

overmostofthemountain'stemplestotheＣhinaＤaoistＡ

ssociation.Ｔhiswasdonetohelpprotecttheenvironment,

ＱianchiＺhuang'consideredtobetheprimarybreath-taking

pathofＭt.Ｈuashan.Ｗhenclimbing,onlyagleamofsky

abovecanbeen,makingclimbersfeelasiftheywereat

thebottomofawell.

ＮorthＰeak（ＣloudＴerraceＰeak）

Ａcrossthe'ＱianchiＺhuang'aretwosimilar

precipitouspaths-respectivelycalled'ＢaichiＸia'and'

ＬaojunＬi'abovewhichclimbersreachＭt.Ｈuashan'sＮ

orthＰeak.ＴhereareprecipitouscliffsonallsidesofＮ

orthＰeak,makingitlooklikeaflatterraceintheclouds,

hencethenameＣloudＴerraceＰeak.Ｉtis1,614meters

（about5,295feet）high.Ｔhreesidesarecliffsandone

sideistothe'Ｃa'er（theearrubbingthecliff）Ｃliff'

whichisthefourthprecipitouspathwheretouristscanclimb

ofＮorthＰeaktreesareluxuriantlygreen,creatingagood

destroyingthevillageswithintheＭt.Ｈuashanarea.Ｔhis

disasterwascaudbytheＱueenＭotheroftheＷest,who

heldher'ＦlatＰeachＣarnival'celebrationthatyear.Ｓ

hecarelesslyspilledalittlejadewinedownfromparadi,

causingariousfloodbelow.Ｔhisnewswasquickly

reportedbyＤeityＳhaohaototheＪadeＥmperorinＣ

elestialＰaradi.ＨegaveapromptordertoＤeityＪ

ulingtogodowntotametheflood.ＷhenＤeityＪuling,

fullofvigorandvitality,descendedfromtheclouds,he

arrivedattheprecipitouscliffofＥastＰeak.Ａtthe

momentthathelaidhislefthandononesideandhisright

legontheother,herippedthemountainintotwohalvesand

immediatelyafloodrushedout.ＴhistaleaddslustertoＥ
