TothisfirstThanksgiving,theIndianshadevenbroughtpopcorn.

Infollowingyears,manyoftheoriginalcolonistscelebratedtheautumn

harvestwithafeastofthanks.

AftertheUnitedStatesbecameanindependentcountry,Congress

recommendedoneyearlydayofthanksgivingforthewholenationto

WashingtonsuggestedthedateNovember26as

1863,attheendofalongandbloodycivilwar,

AbrahamLincolnaskedallAmericanstotasidethelastThursdayin

Novemberasadayofthanksgiving.
