thepast40yearsI',needlesstosay,over

thoyearsI'vehadachancetolookateducationreformfromalotof

themhave

whykidsdon't

'itherpoverty,lowattendance,

ofthethingsthatweneverdiscussorwerarelydiscussisthe

valueandimportanceofhumanconnection,relationships.

ForyearsIwatchedmymothertakethetimeatrecesstoreview,goon

homevisitsintheafternoon,buycombsandbrushesandpeanutbutterand

crackerstoputinherdeskdrawerforkidsthatneededtoeat,andawashcloth

andsomesoapforthekidswhodidn',it'shardtoteach

hekeptthothingsinherdesk,

andyearslater,aftersheretired,Iwatchedsomeofthosamekidscome

throughandsaytoher,"Youknow,,youmadeadifferenceinmy

emefeellikeIwassomebody,whenI

knew,atthebottom,Iwasn'ntyoutojustewhatI'vebecome."

Andwhenmymamadiedtwoyearsagoat92,thereweresomanyformer

studentsatherfuneral,itbroughttearstomyeyes,notbecaushewasgone,

butbecausheleftalegacyofrelationshipsthatcouldneverdisappear.
