4Generalrequirements
Forsafetyrequirements,homologation(inparticular,exhaustemissions)andquality,theexistingstatuto-
tion,therelevantrequirementsoftheDaimler
Groupapply.
Allmaterials,procedures,process,components,andsystemsshallconformtothecurrentregulatory
(governmental)8585shallbeob-
rved.
Duetothedetectionproblemsassociatedwithchromium(VI)inCr(VI)-freezincflakecoatings,theappli-
cationofchromecompoundsforsuchcoatingsisnotpermitted.

DetectionofCr(VI)
ThesuppliershallsupplyevidenceofthefreedomfromCr(VI)badonrecognizedanalyticalmethods.
SuchevidenceshallnormallybeprovidedinaccordancewithDINEN15205(formerlyDIN50993-1).
PossiblecontaminationisacceptableinaccordancewiththeexceptioncurrentlyprovidedfromtheEU
ELVdirective(2000/53/EC)uptoacontentof0,1%byweightrelativetothecorrosionprotectioncoating
(="homogeneousrange");otherwi,thedeterminationlimitforCr(VI)hasbeenspecifiedat0,1µg/cm2
inaccordancewithDINEN15205badontheinterlaboratorytestsperformed.
ThecorrosionresistancevaluesspecifiedinthisDBLshallbeattainedondeliverytotherelevantMer-
cedes-Benzplants.
Dependingonthecoatingsystemandthegeometryanddimensionsofthefasteners,thecorrosionre-
sistancemaysignificantlydeteriorateasaresultofhandling,transportationandautomaticsortingpro-
pliestoallsurfaceversions,butinparticulartozincflakecoatings.
Thisrequirementshallbegivenspecialattentionduringaudits.

6.1Coatings
Thepartsshallhavesmoothandcleansurfacesontheinsideandoutside,andtheyshallbefreeofcor-
rosionproducts.
Tominimizemechanicaldamagetothethreadduringthecoatingofheavyscrewsandbolts,thethreadof
screwsandbolts≥rtoreduceanyriskof
damage,rackcoatingorothersuitablegentlemethodsarealternativelypossibleforpretreatmentand
coating.

WhenapplyingzincflakecoatingsaccordingtothisDBL,DBL8440,inparticularction"Materialswith

Thesupplyingfastenersuppliersareexpected,incooperationwithcoatingcompanies,tospecifythere-
quiredminimumcoatingsystemmass(e.g.>30g/m2)ancewiththis
specificationshallbecheckedregularly.

Thecoatingprovidershallmonitorandcontrolthecoatingprocesswithzincflakecoatingsaswellasthe
dryingandbakingprocessofsuchlayers,inasfaraspossible,bycontinuousmeasurementofthepro-
cludes,besidesmanyotherparameters,aturemeasurementsatthe
differentprocesslocations,measurementofthehumidityduringthedryingprocessofwaterbornezinc
flakecoatings,aswellasmonitoringtheviscosityofthecoatingliquidsbymeansofappropriate
measures.
Thesupplierofthesourcematerialofthecoatings(manufacturerofthetreatmentchemicals/coatingma-
terials)ixpectedtointroduceasystemwhich,bymeansofregularauditsoftheursofthecoating
materials(coatingcompanies),ensurestheabilityofthecoatingcompaniestoproduceahigh-gradeand
uniformcoatallbeat-
testedbythesupplierofthesourcematerialofthecoatings.
Inaddition,thecoatingmaterialmanufacturershallenablethecoatingcompanytoasssthestabilityof
itssubstancesinpracticalu.
onthepremisofthemanufacturerof
thetreatmentchemicals/coatingmaterialsshallverifytheuniformityoftheproductsud,improvecom-
municationbetweenbothsidesandassistindevelopingaproblemsolvingmanagementsystem.
Inpartswithcavitiesorrecess(olts,nuts)orctionsofparts(grecessofscrews
orbolts),accumulationsofcoatingmaterialdetrimentaltotheoperationofthepartarenotpermitted.
Anunevencoatingthicknesswiththeconquentlessthanperfectanticorrosionpropertiesmayrestrict
theapplicationofzincflakecoatingsforthreadedparts,licationof
electroplatedcoatingsinaccordancewithPV9440.47ofthisDBLshouldbepreferredinthisca.
Ifasubquentadditionallubricationusingaparatetouch-resistantlubricantisintendedonzincflake
coatingsandifalingsystemsonzincflakecoatingsareud,nointegratedlubricantsshallbeudin

6.1.3Forelectrodepositedcoatings,alsorefertoDBL8451
WhenapplyingelectrodepositedcoatingsaccordingtothisDBL,ctions"Materialsinstrengthrange
1000N/mm2upto1150N/mm2"and"Materialswithstrengths≥1150N/mm2"ofDBL8451,inparticular,
shallbeobrved.
Theconquenceisthatforscrewsofpropertyclass10.9thematerialstrengthshallberestrictedto
1150N/mm2max.,andformaterialstrengths≥1000N/mm2appropriateheattreatmentsforhydrogeneffu-
sionshallbeperformed.
6.1.4Zinc-nickelcoatingswithadditionaltopcoat(duplexlayers)inaccordancewithDBL
9440.49
Forthecoatingsystems,thetypeoftheadditionalcoating
andsubquentlubricationonthezinc-
nickelbalayersisoptional,providedthatsystemsareinplacethatsignificantlyincreacorrosionpro-
tectionevenundermechanicalloadingofthefastenerscomparedtoconventionalpassivationandal-
ingsappliedinelectroplatingplants.
Note:Theinputrequiredforthemanufactureoftheduplexcorrosionprotectionsystemsspecifiedforthis
PV,whentestedinaccordancewithDINENISO9227NSS,resultsinmuchlongerpotentialperiodsuntil
bamaterialcorrosionthanthetestperiodsof1008hrequiredinthisDBL.
Itisplannedinthefuturealsotodefinemechanicalloadswhichhavetobetoleratedbythesystems
withoutnegativeeffectsonthecorrosionresistance.
6.2Coefficientsoffriction/connectionbehaviorandfinishtreatment
InaccordancewithMBNVDA235-101:1997-07,atotalcoefficientoffrictionof
µtot.=0,08to0,14
shallbetforallthreadedparts.
Forsimilarpartswithspecialconfigurationswhereacoefficientoffrictioncannotbedetermined,thefinish
treatmentshallalsobecarriedoutinsuchawaythatcorrespondingpartswithoutthespecialconfigura-
tionwouldachievetherelevantvaluerange(f-lockingscrews).

TreatmentinaccordancewithMBNVDA235-101:1997-07fortheproductversionsidentified"withinte-
gratedlubricant"accordingtoAnnexBshallbeperformedbymeansofalubricantintegratedintothe
elayershallbeexecutedfreefromlubricants.
ExceptionDBL9440.40:
Ifinthecaofparts≤M8withdrivingrecess,thealwithintegratedlubricantcausdimensional
problemsinthedrivingrecess,theuofalubricantisalsopermittedinplaceoftheal.
Formetricthreadrollingscrews(rdancewithMBN10248)orall-metalprevailingtorquenuts,
anadditionallubricationtreatmentmayberequiredtoensurethatthepermittedrollingorclampingtor-
yalsoapplytodrawingpartsinspecificasmblysituations.
WhenacoatstructureorfinishtreatmentinaccordancewithMBNVDA235-101:1997-07isudforthe
firsttime,andduringinitialsampling,thesuppliershallprovideevidencethattheproductlectedbyhim
forttingthecoefficientoffrictionrangehasthedesiredconnectionbehavior(validation).Thividence
shallbebadonsystematicexaminationsinaccordancewithVDATestSheet235-2032005-08,and
theresultsoftheexaminationsshallbesubmitted.
Thegeometry-relevantdataforthegeometryspecifiedforsampling(size,underheadgeome-
try)shallbesubmittedwiththeinitialsamples.

expectedtoenclothevalidationresultsofascrewwiththreaddimensionM14*1,5inanyoptional
lengthwithcomparable/yalsobeascrewinaccordancewithMBN

Recordsshallberetainedandprentedduringasupplieraudit.
Anadditionallubricanttreatmentonalings/topcoatswithintegratedlubricantshallbedocumented,
resampledandapproved.
Inthecasandforproductversionsmarkedwithparatelubricant,alubricantshallbeudwhich
createsatouch-resistantfilmandcomplieswiththerangeofpropertiesspecifiedinVDA235-101Section
eexceptionofPV.20andPV.50,thelubricantshallbedyedbluish,andinthecaofPV.89
greenish,andshallnotposssanyUVadditives.
6.3Requirementsforspecificproductgroups
6.3.1Nutswithplasticprevailingtorqueelement
Fornutswithplasticprevailingtorqueelement,generallyonlymethodswithbakingtemperaturesofap-
prox.200°Candplasticssuitablefortheapplicationshallbeud;iftheplasticprevailingtorqueelement
isinrtedaftersurfacecoating,therequiredcorrosionresistancevaluesshallbeassuredevenfollowing
caandiftemperature-nsitiveplasticprevailingtorqueelementsare
ud,theexaminationoftheuofproductversions.47isrecommendedaxperienceshowsthat
thecoatstructuresarenotimpairedasmuchbythecrimpingprocess.
6.3.2Pipeconnectors
Zincflakecoatingsonpipeconnectorsshallbeappliedonlybycompaniesforwhichthequalitymanage-
mentunitofthereceivingplanthasspecificallygrantedanapprovalofprocurementsource.
Forpipeconnectorswithzincflakecoatingsconveyingairnolooparticlesoraccumulationsofthecoat-
ingmaterialarepermittedwhichcouldimpairthefunctionalavailabilityoffinevalvesorboreholeswithin
thesystemwherethepipeconnectorsareud.
Forpipeconnectorsconveyingliquidwithelectrodepositedcoatingstherearenointernalcorrosionpro-
ufacturershallensure,however,thattheinternalareasareprovidedwith
anadequatetransportandstorageprotectionsothatcorrosion-freedeliverytoMercedes-Benzfactories
insured.

7.1Dimensionalstabilitytest
Inthecaoftestswiththreadringgage,thedimensionalstabilityofthetestspecimensistherefore
deemedsatisfactoryifthethreadringgagecanstillbescrew-tightened,evenifagainstresistance(tight-
eningtorque),butwithoutotheraids/tools.
Inrefereecas,DINENISO10683specifieslimittighteningtorquesforthetestingofthetruenessto
emeasurementappliestotheas-suppliedcondition.
Forpartswithinternalthread,thetestshallbeperformedinaccordancewithMBN10436.
Forzincflakecoatings,inparticularthowithadditionalorganictopcoats,notethatanymaterialaccu-
mulationsonthebearingsurfaces(eaththebolthead)ofthreadedpartsmayleadtoanunac-
cumulationscanthereforeonlybetoleratedifnoexcessivenegative
ablelimitvaluexistyet,butexperiencesofar
showsthatamaximumvalueof25µmstillappearstobeacceptableformaterialaccumulationsunderthe
bearingsurfacesofthreadedparts.
Unevenaccumulationsofcoatingmaterialsonthesurfacesofthethreadedpartsdisturbingthetightening
andfunctionalpropertiesandtheconveyingandfeedingofthethreadedpartstothefasteninglocations
arenotpermitted.
7.2Corrosionresistancetest
ThecorrosionresistancetestisdeemedtohavebeenpasdwheneachrespectiverequirementinAn-
nexBofthisDBLiscompliedwith.
Thescrewsuppliershould,however,carryoutcorrosiontestsbeyondthetimeperiodsrequiredinthis
DBLinordertogenerateknow-howregardinghowgreatthegapisbetweentheactualcoatingquality
andtherequiredlimitandregardingthescatterofthecoatingquality.
Foreachvariant,uirementforthe
testperiodwithoutbamaterialcorrosionalsoappliesifinapartofthescrews(grecess)
testsubstanceaccumulates.
Therequiredcorrosionprotectionpropertiesshallbeachievedforcaswhereparatelubricantsare
udbothintheoriginalconditionandindegreadcondition(etroleumether).
Theanti-corrosioncoatingsshallnotdemonstrateanyblistersorpeelingduringthespecifiedcorrosion
testsafterthespecifiedtestperiod.
