Thewholeevent-boththeOpenDayandtheprogramofWorkshopsthatfollowed-cost
theFacultylessthan$7,hebreadthofattendanceandtheverypositive
responswereceivedfromparticipantsthroughthefollow-upevaluationquestionnaire,
thisnetcostixtremelysmallwhenmatchedwiththeoutcomesintermsofprofile-
raisingforeducationaldevelopmentattheUniversityofSydney.
Therewereveralthemesrunningthroughtheweek,includingintegratingdisciplines
andtechnologies,innovativedeliveryandasssmentmechanisms,continuousquality
tentand
deliveryofallssionsreceivedpositivefeedbackthroughthefollow-upquestionnaire,
eretheapplicationand
integrationofnewtechnologiestofacilitatetheachievementoflearninggoalsandthe
otbeperfectintheareas,butitemswe
wereabletoprovideufuldiscussionandassistanceforothersfacingsimilarchallenges.
WelearnedanumberoflessonsthroughShowca99-thefirstpublicshowingofour
y,thesignificantlevelofinterestfromstaffinotherfacultiesandschoolsin
ourownUniversitywasnotfullyanticipatedandinretrospectwewereremissinnot

ofthedelegateswhoaskediftherewasanywaytheycouldobtainsomeofthecurriculum
materials-onthelastdayoftheweek!Anumberofapproacheshavebeenmadetothe
FacultysincetheShowcabyInternetcompanieswishingtopartnerwithustotake
advantageofthecuttingedgeeducationaldesignanddeliverywehavecreated.

successofShowca99hasaddedextraweighttothereputationofourFacultyandits
staffasbeingatthecuttingedgeofcontemporarymedicaleducationanditsactive
involvementandcommitmenttodeliveringqualityimprovementinhealthcareonabroad

TheDepartmentalsoprovidesaccesstootherruralcentresinNSWviathe
HealthDepartment’sTelemedicinenetworkandisinvolvedwithexpandingthe
academicpotentialoftheAustralianAgriculturalHealthUnitinMoree(whichwas
transferredtotheFacultyofMedicinein1999).Onanationallevel,niormembers
oftheDepartmentareprominentintheUniversityDepartmentsofRuralHealth
networkwhichhasbeencontractedtoprovideamajortextbookonruralhealth.A
satellitebahasbeencreatedinBourkeforAboriginalHealthWorkertraininginthe
northernFarWestSectorandtheDepartmenthascurrentlyaproposalbeforethe
FederalMinisterforHealthandFamilyServicestodevelopanothermajorresourcein
westernNSWwithemphasisonclinicalinstruction.
3TheDepartmentoffersthefollowingeducationalprograms:
(i)FarWesternNSWruralattachmentsformedical,nursingandhealthrvice
arthemajority(150)aremedicalstudentsfromsixAustralian
medicalschools(plusafewfromoveras).StudentsfromtheSydneyGMP
ionalexperiencesarestructured
ontheGMPprinciplesofadultandlf-directedlearning,adjustedtowardsthe
dentsspend4-6weeksatBroken
Hillinlearningsituationswithageneralpractitioner,thecliniciansofBrokenHill
BaHospitalandinaremotecommunity(currentlyMenindeeorWilcanniaandin
conjunctionwiththeRoyalFlyingDoctorService).Studentshaveaccesstolectures,
discussionofproblem-badlearningexercisandalsotoregularminarsand
tattachmentsaremanagedbyafull-timestudent
co-ordinatorwhoisincontinualconsultationwithclinicalandotherteachersto
organiarrangementsandkeeptheteachersfullyinformedandinvolved.
Thenursingandhealthrvicestudents(approximately80from16Australian
universitiesin1999)areofferedasimilarlearningmodeladjustedtoemphasi

placementsforstudentsofnursingandthealliedhealthdisciplinesandalsoto
introduceprogramsforUniversityofSydneystudentsindentistryandpharmacy.

arrangementshavebeenmadewiththeFacultyofHealthSciencesforBrokenHill

Health)atCumberlandtoup-gradetheirqualification.

programmehasbeenjointlydevelopedbytheDepartment,theFacultyofNursingand
signedastheeducationalbasisforthenewly

theinitial1999intake.

DepartmentfromBrokenHillBaHospitaltoadvanceknowledgeandskillsfor
newlyregisterednurswithanoptionforamonth’splacementinaremote

1.1Background
ThecombineddegreeMBBS/PhDandMBBS/MPHprogramwasintroducedaspart
oftheUniversityofSydneygraduatemedicalprogram(USydMP)s
oftheprogramarebestsummaridbytheUSydMPprospectus:
MedicalgraduatesfromtheUniversityofSydneyhavealongtradition
ofachievementofexcellenceinrearch,academicmedicineandthemedical
antswithaninterestinrearchwillrecognitheneedto
equipthemlveswiththePhDwhichnormallyreprentstheentrylevelinto
arearchoracademiccareerinmedicine.
APhD,alongwiththenecessarymedicaldegree,isincreasingly
becominganimportantqualificationforthoekinghospital-badand
othersignificantspecialistpositions.
TheMPHdegreeishighlyregardedandreprentsthenormalentry
ates
acquireadditionalskillsincomponentsofcommunity-focusdmedical
practice,includingclinicalepidemiology,whichisincreasinglycentralin
medicaldecision-making.
TheCombinedDegreeProgrammakesitpossibleforstudentsto
completetheGraduateMedicalProgramandtheirhigherdegreeinlessthan
thetimenormallyrequiredtocompletethemedicalcourandtherearch
achievedbydevotingthe'Options&Electives'
componentoftheGraduateMedicalProgramtorearch.
TheCombinedDegreeProgram(CDP)wasdesignedasanalternativeroutetothe
traditional“medical”PhDwhichisgenerallyundertakeninAustraliaaspartof
specialisttraining,etablewas
modelledonthatofsuccessfulMD-PhDprogramswhichforover30yearshavebeen
partofthemedicalscientisttrainingprogram(MSTP)ueofthe
MSTPandintercalatedrearch-medicaldegreesintrainingphysician-scientistsis
atementcanbejustifiedfrommeasuresofthesuperiorcareer
outcomesofMSTPgraduatescomparedtothatoftheirpeerswithoutrearchdegrees
(Culotta,1993;Health,1998),ofimprovedlearningstrategiesinintercalateddegree
candidates(McManus,Richards&Winder,1999),aswellasonthelesstangiblebut
muchmoreimportantbenefitforsocietywhichtheprenceoftruephysician-
scientistsbrings(Bickeletal.,1981;Culotta,1993;Gershon,1999;Wyngaarden,
1979).
Itwasrecognidthatthereisaresignificantdifferencesbetweenthepropod
ord,themostsignificant

fundedMD-PhDcandidatesareexemptedfromtheirmedicaltuitionfeesandhave
financialsupportfortheirdoctoralstudiesguaranteedfromtheirpointofentrytothe
atesfortheUSydMPcombineddegreeprogramwereliabletoHECS
paymentsfortheirmedicalstudies(butnotfortheirrearchdegree)andwere
expectedtoapplyforrearchscholarshipsupportfromtraditionalsources(National
HealthandMedicalRearchCouncil–NHMRCscholarshipandAustralian
PostgraduateAward-APA)nbenefitoftheCDPwas
enastimegainedbydevotingtheoptionsandelectivescomponentoftheUSydMP
torearch(eabove).ThePhDcomponentoftheMSTPisalsotypicallylonger(3-
4yearsfulltimerearch)thanthatexpectedofthecandidatesintheCDPprogram
(2.5-3yearsfulltimerearch).ThisdifferencereflectsthedifferenceinaveragePhD
durationinthetwocountriesbuttheperceptionthattheCDPwasdesignedasa
‘short’PhDdegreehadramificationsfortheprogressoftheprogramasdescribed
below.

1.2.1Admissions
1.2.1.1Admissionsprocess

thetimeofapplicationtheywerealsorankedaccordingtotheirtertiaryand
GAMSATperformance,andtheirrearchachievementsandpotentialasjudgedby
theirscientificpublicationsandtheopinionsoftwoscientificasssors(normallyan
Honoursdegreesupervisorandoneotherperson).Candidatesweregroupedas
outstanding,acceptable,dstick
forthisgroupingwasthatcandidatesrankedas‘outstanding’werethowhowould
behighlycompetitiveforAPAsupport.
TogetherwithallotherUSydMPapplicants,theCombinedDegreeProgram(CDP)
erviewisthe
candidatesconsideredoutstandingoracceptable
wereplacedatthetopoftheinterviewoutcomeband(bands1-5indescendingorder)
vesanadmissionsadvantageforCDPcandidates
whoareallocatedtotheinterviewband(usuallyband3)inwhichtheUSydMPinput
quotaisreached.
AlargediscrepancybetweentheCDPrankingandtheUSydMPinterviewscorewas
iterionhasbeen
udforre-interviewoftwocandidatestodate.

Cloto10%ofallapplicantstotheUSydMPin1997appliedforentrytotheCDP
program;thisproportionhasdecreadtolessthan5%byforthe2000cohort(e
Table1).Theapplicants’institutionofundergraduatestudyisingeneralsplitevenly
betweenUniversityofSydneyandotherinstitutions(average1997-1999:48%Univ.
Sydney).AnalysisoftheGAMSATperformanceofCDPcandidatesshowedno
significantdifferencesonanyofthescoresforthe1997-1999CDPcohorts,or
betweenUSydMPapplicantswhoappliedforCDPandthowhodidnot.

mentorsweretoactasinformalpointsofcontactbetweenCDPcandidatesand
ethechangestotheprogram,theconcernsgivenabove
weregenerallyreiteratedasthemainreasonforwithdrawalbythocandidateswho
eventuallylefttheprogramin1999.
1.2.2.3OtherfactorscontributingtowithdrawalfromtheCDP.
•Commentsmadeattheinterviews,andinformaldiscussionwiththe
candidatesandmembersoffaculty,revealedthatmanycandidateshadbeen
activelydiscouragedfromcontinuingtheCDPbymembersoffacultywho
werenotconvincedthattheCDPwasanappropriatealternativetothe
‘traditional’routeofaPhDaspartofspecialisttraining.
•TheadvantagetoCDPcandidatesintheUSydMPadmissionsprocesswas
alsoacknowledgedbysomecandidatesasfactorinfluencingtheirdecisionto
applyfortheCDP.
•Thecomment“Ithought[theCDP]wasagoodideabutnowI’vebecome
engrosdinmymedicalstudies”summariswellthentimentexpresdby
manycandidateswhoeventuallylefttheprogram.
1.2.2.4OutcomesforcandidateswhowithdrewfromCDP.
Thecandidateswholefttheprogramwereallowedtotransfertothe‘mainstream’
USydMPwithoutprejudice;iethetransferwasnotconsideredawithdrawalfroma
higherdegree.
1.2.2.5Changestoadmissionspolicyfrom1999.
TheCDPcommitteewasconcernedthatthenumberofcandidatesleavingthe
programwashavinganegativeinfluenceontheperceptionoftheprogramasawhole
andthatthisinturncouldinfluencetheprospectsforthowhoremainedinthe
tialpolicyofadmittingtheapplicantswhowererankedas
outstandingoracceptablewasen,inretrospect,astooambitious(programsat
comparablesizemedicalschoolsintheUSAaremuchsmallerthanourinitialintake
of25:egCornellMedicalSchoolaccepts7/year).From1999onlycandidatesranked
asoutstandinghavebeenadmittedtotheprogram;whetherthischangewillgivea
commensuratereductioninattritionratesremainstobeen.
1.2.2.6OutcomesforcandidatesremainingintheCDP.
TheCDPprogramisstillinitsinfancy,heless,
itcanbestatedthatthecandidatesareallmakinggoodprogressintheirrearch
degreeandshoweverysignoffulfillingthepromithattheywillbecomeactive
cohorthas11paperspublished
ininternationalrefereedjournalssince1997andnumerousabstractsatlocaland
mpareswellwiththerearchoutputofan
ltimePhDcandidatesallhave
attractedscholarshipsupport(Table3).Thesupportforcandidatenrolledpart-time
concurrentwithUSydMPyear2,fromMedicalFoundationscholarships,isavery
positivesteptoencouragingearlyengagementofcandidateswithintheprogram,and
shouldbeexpandedifpossible.

knowledgeaboutthegenomethathasbeengainedsincethecurrentCDPcohort
enrolledfortheirUSydMPstudiesapproachesallthatwhichwasknownbefore1997.
Flexible,independentrearchersarerequiredtotranslatethisknowledgeintoclinical
rearchandpractice(Horton,1999)andtothedesiredimprovementsinpublic
graduateswillentertheirspecialisttrainingatthepostdoctorallevel:
theywillbeyoungmedicalgraduatestrainedtocarryoutindependentrearch,and
ideallyplacedtoengageintheclinicaltransformationofnewbiologicalknowledge.
TheanalysisbelowaddressimprovementstothecurrentstructureoftheCDP
programanddiscusssomelong-termdirectionsinwhichtheCDPprogramcould
move.
2.1ContinuingStudentconcerns
Astheprogramdevelopstheneedsofcandidatesatdifferentstagesoftheprocessare
becomingclearer.
2.1.1Timepressure
Informaldiscussionwiththecandidatescurrentlyengagedinfull-timerearchshows
greatmotivationto‘getthejobdone’ionof
returningtothirdyearoftheUSydMPwithanincompleterearchprogramis
scontinuingneedforflexibilityinthetiming
ofthePhDprogramandtheprogressofcandidateswhoreturntoUSydMPyear3will
havetobeclolymonitoredtoensurethattheydonotsufferundulythepressureof
tryingtokeeptwodegreesontheboil.
2.1.2Reintegrationtoclinicalyears
Specificproposalstoenhancestudentreintegrationtoclinicalyearshavebeenmade
bytheCDPcandidates(ttached).Theincludeattendance
commended
ensibleandtimely,andtheirinclusion
asastudentinitiatedfeatureoftheprogramwillbeagreatboostforthecandidates
moraleaswellasforthestructureoftheprogramasawhole.
2.1.3Multifocalsupportinadministration
Theprogramhasbeenstructuredasa‘sandwichcour’oftheUSydMPandaPhDin
theFacultyofMedicine,
a,
thereisflexibilityforcandidates,whocantransfertoorfromtheCDPinthefirsttwo
,the
doctoralcandidatureofaCDPcandidatewouldbehandledbytheBoardofGraduate
StudiesinthesamemannerasthatofanyotherPhDcandidateintheFacultyandthe
University,thunsuringequalstandardsandreducinganyduplicationof
advantageofthisstructurefromthecandidates’perspectiveis
thattheymustdealwithtwotsofadministrationforwhatis,fromtheUniversity
perspective,thedifficultiencounteredbythecohorts
inthefirsttwoyearswillbecomelesssignificantastheFacultybecomesaccustomed
heless,theprovisionofanidentified‘CDPadministrativesupport
person’wouldbeofgreatbenefittothecandidateswhoarealreadyworkinghardto
maintaintheirrearchprojectandarefrustratedbyalackofcentralidsupport.
2.1.4The‘findthesupervisor’game.
Tofindansuitablesupervisorandprojectisstillthelargestsingledifficultyreported
torschemehasbeenufulinsomerespectsbut
candidatesreportthatapartfromadvertisingtheirownfieldofinterest,andpromoting
themlvesasidealsupervisors,mostmentorsarenotagoodsourceofinformation
oblemshouldbealleviatedastheprogramgrows
andthecandidatesbuilduptheirownnetworkof‘winning’laboratories,butthere
needstobecontinuedactivityonthepartoffacultytoadvertithemlvesto
websiteisasuitablemeansoftransmissionfor
suchinformation;thebestapproachmaybetocallfor‘advertiments’forCDP
projectsamongfacultyratherthanattempttocompileacomprehensivelistof
rearchareas.
2.2Dowewantpilotsorastronauts?
Thereductioninnumbersadmittedtotheprogramsince1998carriesanimplicit
assumptionthattheprogramisdesignedforanelitegroupofcandidates:byanalogy
theycanbeenasastronautsratherthanaircraftpilotswho,thoughhighlytrained,
in
somenatoddswiththeargumentsadvancedabovefortheintroductionofaCDP:
thatlargenumbersofwelltrainedphysician-scientistsareneededtoadvanceclinical
andbasicrearchinthiscountry,andtorespondappropriatelytothechangingneeds
ctionsof
Facultyaretomatchthisntiment,anexpansionoftheCDPprogramwouldbe
sclearfromtheexperienceoftheprogramsofarthatthekindof
ambitious,rapidchangeenvisionedisnotgoingtooccurbysimplyadmittinglarge
numbersofcandidatestoaprogramwhichhasnoestablishedprecedentinthis
vativeelementsinaFacultywhichpromotesitlfasprogressiveand
forward-lookinginthesphereofmedicaleducationhavealreadybeenasourceof
r-termstrategyis
needed;twosuggestionsaregivenbelowinction2.3.
UntiltheCDPprogramiswellestablishedandthesuccessofthegraduatesis
demonstrateditisrecommendedthatthecurrentstrictadmissioncriteriabe
maintained.
2.3Achievingthelong-termaimsoftheprogram
Expansionandimprovementstophysician-scientisttrainingprogramssuchasthe
CDPcannotbeexpectedtooccurrapidlyorinisolation.
•CoordinationwithcorrespondingprogramsbeingdevelopedatotherGraduate
MedicalSchoolsisrequiredtoprentacoherentpictureofphysician-scientist
trainingprogramstotheGovernmentbodies(chieflyDEETYAandNHMRC)
whopoliciesinfluencetherearchtrainingaspectsoftheCDP.
•CoordinationwiththeMedicalCollegesisrequiredtoimprovetheintegrationof
‘pre-specialist’degreessuchasCDPwiththeexistingmedicaltrainingprograms
attheColleges,whopoliciesinfluencethemedicaltrainingaspectsoftheCDP.
•Facultymustbemorethoroughlyappraidofthepurpo,methodsandgoalsof
nbeachievedtosomeextentthroughinternal‘promotion’
schemes,butinthelongtermitisthesuccessofthecandidateswhichwillbe
portantthatcandidates’longtermprogressbemonitored
toprovidethiskindofhardevidence.
2.4RelationtootherrearchandPublicHealthtraininginthe
USydMP
TheMMedScandMPHcourworkprogramsareavailabletoanyUSydMP
candidatewho,withpermission,caninterrupttheirmedicalstudiesforuptooneyear
ationshipbetweentheCDPand
theotherprogramsisnotclearinthemindsofthemajorityofUSydMPstudentsor
kelythatpotentialcandidatesfor
theotherdegreeshavebeendiscouraged,throughlackofknowledgeorpooradvice,
toremedythissituationwouldbetoexpandtheaegis
east,the
profileoftheotherprogramscouldberaidbysomesortofadvertisingto
potentialcandidatesamongthefirstandcondyearUSydMPcohorts.
3Recommendations
Therecommendationsgivenbelowarethepersonalopinionoftheauthor,buttheyare
e
givenheretoFacultyAcademicBoardforcommentbeforerecommendationsare
madebytheCDPcommitteetoafullmeetingofFaculty.
3.1Breakthetwoyearrule
Recommendation:thatCDPpolicyandinformationaldocumentsbealteredtoreferto
theperiodoffull-timerearchas‘normallytwotothreeyears’.Thiswillrelaxthe
perceptionofthedegreeasunreasonablyconstrainedintime.
3.2Part-timePhDenrolmentconcurrentwithUSydMPyear2
Recommendation:thatCDPcandidatesberequiredtoenrolpart-timeinPhDatthe
llincreathetimeavailablefor
rearchtowardthedoctoraldegreeandreflectsaccuratelythecurrentworkloadof
thecandidateswhohaveremainedintheprogram.
3.3Encouragementofstudentinitiatives
Recommendation:thatFacultyencouragethemaintenanceandexpansionofstudent
initiativesincludingaccesstoreviewandasssmentmaterialandcontactwith
clinicalschoolsduringtherearchdegree.
3.4LiaisonwiththeCollegesandotherinstitutions.
Recommendation:thatFacultytakestepstowardscoordinatingtheCDPprogramwith
thoofotherGraduateMedicalprogramsandimprovingliaisonwiththemedical

studentsarereintegratedintoGMP3theirmedicalknowledgeandclinicalskillsaresharp(ifnot
sharper),andthattheyhavenotbeendisadvantagedbyhavingundertakentherearchdegree.
TheCDPcommitteeindeavoringtotakeanumberofstepstotuparevisionprogramforits
members,andareekingtheassistanceandsupportofbothfacultyandtheclinicalschools.
6Proposition2:lfdirectedPBLs
First,opodthatthewillrunfor1.5-2
hoursonceperweekonascheduledevening,inlinewiththeworkbeingcoveredbytheequivalent1

appointedtolookaftersuchmattersforCDPstudents,justasthefacultyofficedealswithsuchmatters
forotherGMPstudents
PerhapsthisadministratorcouldfollowuprelevantadministrationattheClinicalSchoolasis
necessaryforCDPstudents(asabove),andlookafterotherimportantaspectsoftheCDP,suchasPhD
enrollment,scholarshipsandclinicalskillstutorialsandcours(ebelow).

urrevisionprogramwillruninsynchronywithourequivalentGMPyear,thiswillrve
asagoodindicatorofhowourrevisionisgoing,andalsoenableustoacoveranyothercasthatour
particularlyimportanttous,asweare
awarethatinGMP3,theyeargroupexaminationsincludematerialthathasbeencoveredwhilstin
GMP1andGMP2ofthatcour.
Perhapstheexaminationscommitteecanmakeformativeasssmentpapersavailableforcollectionby
CDPstudentsformthefacultyoffice,and,viatheCDPwebsiteordirectbyemail,informthestudents
note,perhapsanexaminationssitecanbeestablishedon
atively,thiscouldbeanotherfacetoftheCDPthatis
dealtwithbyafacultyadministrator.
8Proposition5:clinicalexaminationskillstutorials
Second,weareekingtheassistanceoffacultyandtheclinicalschoolstoincludeCDPstudentsinthe

coulddothis,but,fromourpointofviewthemosteffectivewouldbeasfollows:1.5hourtutorialsper
weekinone’sallocatedteachinghospitalwithaclinicalexaminationskillstutor,inlinewiththe
rwords,ratherthanbeing
groupedtogether,CDPstudentscouldbeallocatedtodifferentGMPclinicalexaminationgroupsas
thatgroupprogressthrougheachblock(ieCDP1studentsjoinaclinicaltutegroupinGMP1;CDP2
studentswouldjoinaclinicaltutegroupinGMP2).
Inthisarrangement,than
attendingwhatwasfoundtobeaveryintroductorytofclinicalexaminationtutorials,studentscould
bettlingintothefulltimecomponentoftheirrearch.
Therearefourimportantadvantagesinthisapproachtobeingincludedinclinicalexaminationskills
y,itavoidshavingtoaccommodateyetanotherentiregroupattheclinicalschool,but
insteadmayinvolvefittinginonlytwoorthreeextrastudentsattheverymostattheclinicalschoolfor

weretheca,sinceeachofthestudentswillnodoubthavewidelydifferent
agendasitwillbeimpossibletocoordinatenotonlygrouptutorials,butalsoathoroughandsystematic
revisionprocess,thusjeopardizingtherevisionprocessfortheindividualsinthatgroup(ebelow:

Concernsregardingthisparticulararrangementhavebeenbroughtupanddiscusdthoroughlybythe

andGMP2,wewouldnotallbeahindrancetoourequivalentcolleaguesinthetutorialsgiventhis

givenourexperienceinthistting,wewouldbeveryawareoftheneedtobesupportiveofthe
developmentofgroupdynamicsandofothermembersofthatgroup.
Wealsorequestaccesstothesamelfdirectedandorganidskillsssionsasourcolleagues(e.g.
venepuncture,airwaymaintenanceetc.).Similarly,werequestaccesstothesameformative
examinationopportunitiesthatareavailabletoourcolleagues,suchasSHAPEsorOSCES,togiveus
anindicationoftheprogressofourrevision,andpracticeinthistypeofexaminationtting,which
willnodoubtbenecessarywhenwerecommenceourmedicalstudiesinhospitalsinGMP3.

Itissuggestedthat,shouldthePBLs,clinicalexaminationskillstutorialsandformativeexamination
opportunitiesbeinitiatedforCDP1andCDP2students,thattheyremainnoncompulsory,andthat

AswasdiscusdattheCurriculumConference,theestablishmentofmentorsforCDPstudentsinthe
sagethattheywillberesponsibleforguidanceofCDP
studentsinGMP1andGMP2ingettingaprojectandsupervisorestablishedforinstance,andperhaps
overeingthedevelopmentofstudents’clinicalskillsoverthefulltimerearchcomponentofthe
ciroleofthementors
willneedtobediscusdfurther.
10Thequestionofa“refresher”courpriortocommencementofGMP3
AnumberofotherUniversitiesaroundtheworld(eHarvardMD–PhDprogram,forinstance)runa
“refresher”cour
instance,intheCDPthiskindofcourcouldberuninNovemberorDecemberpriorto
ourcouldberunasanintensiveclinical
experienceoveranumberofweeks(ranginganywherefrom2-3weeks,towhatisdoneinsome
schoolsoveras,for6-8weeks),coveringtheesntialcomponentsasrequiredforthedemandsof
henatureoftheGMPtowardstheendofGMP2,perhapsthiscouldbetimedbestfor
theOncologyblockwiththeequivalentGMP2year.
Studentsoveraswhohavehadtheopportunityofsuchacourhavefoundthatithelpedthem‘get
intotheswingofthings’sotospeak,butontheotherhand,somefoundittobebadlytimed,
particularlyiftheywereinthesituationwheretheyweretryingtodrawtheirPhDtoaclo(getting
thelastexperimentsfinished,orwritingup,forinstance).
Thebenefitofsuchacourwould,wefeel,needtobeinvestigatedsubquenttothedecisionasto
whatkindofclinicalrevisionprocesswillbeinstigatedduringthefulltimerearchcomponent.
INSUMMARY:
AsthefirststudentsofthecombineddegreeprogramatTheUniversityofSydney,weareeagerto
makethisasuccessfulprogramnotonlyforourlves,butfortheyearsofgraduatemedicalstudentsto
followwhowishtocombinethe‘benchwiththebeeper’.GiventhestructureoftheCDP(boththe
demandsofthePhDandofGMP3)weareparticularlyconcernedwiththetransition‘fromthebenchto
thebeeper,andhavepropodveralinitiativesthatwefeelwillmakethissuccessful:
•StudentsinthefulltimecomponentoftheirrearchintheCDParehenceforthreferredtoas
CDP1,CDP2andCDP3.
•ThestudentswillrunlfdirectedPBLrevisiontutorialsoneeveningperweekinlinewith
GMP1(forCDP1students)andGMP2(forCDP2students)courmaterial.
•Thestudentshavetheopportunitytosignuponablockbyblockbasiswithatutorialgroup
attheirclinicalschool,andattendclinicalexaminationskillstutorialsonceperweekonthe
allocatedclinicalday(ieCDP1studentwithaGMP1grouponThursdays;CDP2studentwith
aGMP2grouponTuesdays).CDP1wouldnotattendclinicalexaminationskillstutorialsin
Block1.
•Studentswillhaveaccesstobothwrittenformativeexaminationsandformativeexaminations
atclinicalschools(OSCESandSHAPES).
•Afacultyadministratorisappointedtocoordinatetheandotheradministrationalaspectsfor
studentsintheCDP.
Weunderstandthatsomeoftheproposalsmayrequiremuchplanningand
organisation,butasmembersofthecommitteewearededicatedtoimprovingthe
opportunitiesavailabletostudentsintheCDP,andareverymuchwillingto
