ifyouaskthemwhatisanEnglishsyllable?Theyprobablydonotknowhowto

define,buttheycangiveyoumanyexamplesbycountingfingerswhilespeaking

crucialasitmanifeststheimportantroleofsyllablein

therhythmandnaturalnessofspeech(Roach,2000,p.67).Andalsoitis

tscannotunderstandstressinwords

isasyllable?Asyllableisaunitofsoundor

pronunciationwhichislargerthanasinglesound,likeaphoneme,andsmallerthan

aword(Yam,2009).Forinstance,"are"/a:/hasonlyonesyllable;"beautiful"

Ontheotherhand,PhonotacticConstraintsofEnglishiswithtantamount
