InternationalWomen'sDayisthestoryofordinarywomen

asmakersofhistory;itisrootedinthecenturies-oldstruggleof

ancientGreece,Lysistratainitiatedaxualstrikeagainstmenin

ordertoendwar;duringtheFrenchRevolution,Parisianwomen

callingfor"liberty,equality,fraternity"marchedonVersaillesto

demandwomen'ssuffrage.

TheideaofanInternationalWomen'sDayfirstaroatthe

turnofthecentury,whichintheindustrializedworldwasaperiod

ofexpansionandturbulence,boomingpopulationgrowthand

ingisabriefchronologyofthemost

importantevents:

1909

InaccordancewithadeclarationbytheSocialistPartyof

America,thefirstNationalWoman'sDaywasobrvedacrossthe

ontinuedtocelebrateit

onthelastSundayofthatmonththrough1913.

1910

TheSocialistInternational,meetinginCopenhagen,

establishedaWomen'sDay,internationalincharacter,tohonour

themovementforwomen'srightsandtoassistinachieving

posalwasgreetedwith

unanimousapprovalbytheconferenceofover100womenfrom

17countries,whichincludedthefirstthreewomenelectedtothe

ddatewaslectedforthe

obrvance.

1911

AsaresultofthedecisiontakenatCopenhagentheprevious

year,InternationalWomen'sDaywasmarkedforthefirsttime(19

March)inAustria,Denmark,GermanyandSwitzerland,where

additiontotherighttovoteandtoholdpublicoffice,they

demandedtherighttowork,tovocationaltrainingandtoanend

todiscriminationonthejob.

Lessthanaweeklater,on25March,thetragicTriangleFire

inNewYorkCitytookthelivesofmorethan140workinggirls,

enthada

significantimpactonlabourlegislationintheUnitedStates,and

theworkingconditionsleadinguptothedisasterwereinvoked

duringsubquentobrvancesofInternationalWomen'sDay.

1913-1914

AspartofthepeacemovementbrewingontheeveofWorld

WarI,RussianwomenobrvedtheirfirstInternationalWomen's

ereinEurope,on

oraround8Marchofthefollowingyear,womenheldrallies

eithertoprotestthewarortoexpresssolidaritywiththeirsisters.

1917

With2millionRussiansoldiersdeadinthewar,Russian

womenagainchothelastSundayinFebruarytostrikefor

"breadandpeace".Politicalleadersoppodthetimingofthe

Nationswomen'sconferences,hashelpedmakethe

commemorationarallyingpointforcoordinatedeffortsto

demandwomen'srightsandparticipationinthepoliticaland

singly,InternationalWomen'sDayisa

timetoreflectonprogressmade,tocallforchangeandto

celebrateactsofcourageanddeterminationbyordinarywomen

whohaveplayedanextraordinaryroleinthehistoryofwomen's

rights.

TheRoleoftheUnitedNations

FewcauspromotedbytheUnitedNationshavegenerated

moreintenandwidespreadsupportthanthecampaignto

rterof

theUnitedNations,signedinSanFranciscoin1945,wasthefirst

internationalagreementtoproclaimgenderequalityasa

hen,theOrganizationhas

helpedcreateahistoriclegacyofinternationallyagreed

strategies,standards,programmesandgoalstoadvancethe

statusofwomenworldwide.

Overtheyears,UnitedNationsactionfortheadvancement

ofwomenhastakenfourcleardirections:promotionoflegal

measures;mobilizationofpublicopinionandinternationalaction;

trainingandrearch,includingthecompilationofgender

degregatedstatistics;anddirectassistancetodisadvantaged

centralorganizingprincipleoftheworkofthe

UnitedNationsisthatnoenduringsolutiontosociety'smost

threateningsocial,economicandpoliticalproblemscanbefound

withoutthefullparticipation,andthefullempowerment,ofthe

world'swomen.

hundredyearon,thepertinenceofthiventishonoredthrough

IWD’s20xxglobaltheme‘ShapingProgress’.

Injustthreeyears,20xxwilleIWD’sCentenary–100

yearsofwomen’sunitedactionforglobalequalityandchange.

Organizationsaroundtheworldhavealreadycommenced

planningfortheirIWDCentenarycelebrations.

ThefirstInternationalWomen’sDaywaslaunchedon8

March1911inCopenhagen,Leaderofthe‘Women’sOffice’

fortheSocialDemocraticPartyinGermany.

In1991,ahandfulofmeninCanadalaunchedthe“white

ribbon”campaign,whichdeliversthemessagethatmenare

oppodtosomeothermen’sviolenceagainstwomen.
