3.作为辅助翻译工具，GOOGLE还有一个非常重要的作用：试对作用，即用尝试法寻找某种英语表达方式和采用“翻译统计学”原理检验某种译法是否妥当或地道。
比如，我要翻译“ 相对水平120°-170°范围内无级调节”， 我知道“无级调节”是“stepless adjustment”,“水平”是 “the horizontal”,“度”是 “degrees”，但不知这个“相对水平…度” 怎么表达最恰当？再具体点，就是中间这个介词选什么好定不下来。输入“" degrees * the horizontal" site:.us”，（注：*是通配符，即可代替任何一个词），google一下，就看到以下类似表达：
at an angle of 60 degrees above the horizontal；
at an angle of 20 degrees from the horizontal；
in the zone from fifteen degrees below the horizontal。
据此判断，选择“from the horizontal.”是本例最佳译法。

6. 就如前述“一次性通过”的英译“pass at the first attempt”，我为什么觉得这个比较地道呢，而不是从别的词典中查到的“ pass without retrying”, 那是因为将前者用引号引起来输入google，返回结果565项，而后者返回结果只有一项。
善用“翻译统计法”，就好比为自己找来了一位万能的导师，可以在“他”引导下找到最佳译法。
7.另外，还可以用google的图片查询功能来帮助翻译，特别是英译中方向，比如，笔者在翻译一篇灯具文章中遇到这二个词 straight batten holder和angle batten holder ，我知道holder 是灯座，但前面的straight/angle batten却不知如何是好，照字面直译是“直板式灯座”和“弯板式灯座”，但中文灯具术语中没有这种说法，怎么办？我便把“angle batten holder ” 输入到google中进行图片(image)查询，看一看返回的图片，是何物一目了然，虽然仍说不准其中文术语，但只要拿这个图片给客户一看，客户便完全明白了。

美国国会参议院近日以90票对5票的投票结果，通过了一项有关信用卡消费者权益的法案，旨在加强对消费者的保护。这项法案对信用卡行业的商业行为提出了改革要求，寻求提高公平性和透明度，禁止信用卡公司不合理地提高利率、任意加收手续费和罚款等行为。

信用卡公司最近似乎跟国会山那边的人关系不太好，连最有经济头脑的立法人士都站到消费者一边指责他们提高利率和手续费的行为。
在上面的报道中，rate hike就是“利率上调”的意思，当然在这里，“利率”特指interest rate of credit card（信用卡利率）。利率上调了，持卡人要还银行的钱就多了，自然会受到指责。在这样的形势下，估计也只有rate cut（利率下调）这样的举措才会受到用户的欢迎。不管hike还是cut，银行的rate adjustment（利率调整）总是会引起人们的关注。
Hike在这里指a sudden or large increa in prices, rates, or taxes（价格、利率或者税收突然大幅增加）。不过，“涨工资”也在hike的范畴之内，叫做wage hike，这肯定比price hike（价格上涨）和hike in living expens（生活费上涨）要让人欣喜得多。

抚恤金 comfort fund
