Passivepedestriansafetymeasuresinvolvevehiclestructures(,
bumper)thatexpandduringcollisioninordertominimizeimpactofthe
pedestrianlegorheadhittingthevehicle.
Forexample,Mercedes-Benzintroducedtheactivebonnetasstandardforthe
newE-Class(2009).Thesystemincludesthreeimpactnsorsinthefront
ctionaswellasspecialbonnethingespretensionedbypowerfulsprings.
Uponimpactwithapedestrian,therearctionofthebonnetispushed
upwardsby50millimetresinafractionofacond,thunlargingthe
temisreversibleandcanberetmanuallybythe

Althoughimportant,passivepedestriansafetymeasuresareconstrainedby
thelawsofphysicsintermsofabilitytoreducecollisionenergyandthusinjury
er,passivemeasurescannotaccountforinjuriessustainedinthe
condaryimpactofthepedestrianhittingtheroad.
Yetvision-badpedestriandetectionisadifficultproblemforanumberof
ectsofinterestappearinhighlyclutteredbackgroundsand
haveawiderangeofappearances,duetobodysizeandpo,clothingand
andtypicallyfarawayfromthecamera,and
thusappearrathersmallintheimage,complication
isthatbecauofthemovingvehicle,onedoesnothavetheluxurytou
simplebackgroundsubtractionmethods(suchasthoudinsurveillance
