furniture,theworkshop,thespaciousrooms,thenewdecorations

andthearchitecturalpatternofthelargeworldhouinwhich

weareliving.

Alongwiththescientificandtechnologicalrevolution,we

havealsowitnesdaworldwidefreedomrevolutionoverthe

ntupsurgeoftheNegropeopleofthe

UnitedStatesgrowsoutofadeepandpassionatedetermination

tomakefreedomandequalityareality“here”and“now.”Inone

ntheCivilRightsMovementintheUnitedStatesisa

specialAmericanphenomenonwhichmustbeunderstoodinthe

lightofAmericanhistoryanddealtwithintermsofthe

notherandmoreimportant

level,whatishappeningintheUnitedStatestodayisa

significantpartofaworlddevelopment.

Weliveinaday,saidthephilosopherAlfredNorth

Whitehead,“whencivilizationisshiftingitsbasicoutlook;a

majorturningpointinhistorywherethepresuppositionson

whichsocietyisstructuredarebeinganalyzed,sharply

challenged,andprofoundlychanged.”Whatweareeingnowis

afreedomexplosion,therealizationof“anideawhotimehas

come,”touVictorHugo'prumblingof

discontentthatweheartodayisthethunderofdisinherited

mass,risingfromdungeonsofoppressiontothebrighthills

ajesticchorustherisingmassare

singing,inthewordsofourfreedomsong,“Ain'tgonnalet

nobodyturnusround.”Allovertheworldlikeafever,freedom

greatmassofpeoplearedeterminedtoendtheexploitation

eawakeandmovingtowardtheir

hearthemrumblinginevery

villagestreet,onthedocks,inthehous,amongthe

students,eral

centuriesthedirectionofhistoryflowedfromthenationsand

societiesofWesternEuropeoutintotherestoftheworldin

“conquests”riod,theeraof

colonialism,thisbeing

,weare“shiftingourbasicoutlooks.”

Thedevelopmentsshouldnotsurprianystudentof

tellsthethrillingstoryofhowMosstoodinPharaoh'scourt

centuriesagoandcried,“Letmypeoplego.”Thiswasanopening

ntstruggleinthe

withinhasremindedtheNegroofhisbirthrightoffreedom,and

somethingwithouthasremindedhimthatitcanbe

ouslyorunconsciously,hehasbeencaughtupby

thespiritofthetimes,andwithhisblackbrothersofAfrica

andbrownandyellowbrothersinAsia,SouthAmericaandthe

Caribbean,theUnitedStatesNegroismovingwithanof

greaturgencytowardthepromidlandofracialjustice.

Nothingcouldbemoretragicthanformentoliveinthe

revolutionarytimesandfailtoachievethenewattitudesand

WashingtonIrving'sfamiliarstoryofRipVanWinkle,theone

thingthatweusuallyrememberisthatRipslepttwenty

sanotherimportantpoint,however,thatisalmost

hesignontheinninthelittletown

ontheHudsonfromwhichRipdepartedandscaledthemountain

wentup,thesignhadapictureof

dependsonourabilitytostayawake,toadjusttonewideas,to

learntoliveasbrothersortogetherwewillbeforcedtoperish

asfools.

Wemustworkpassionatelyandindefatigablytobridgethe

ofthegreatproblemsofmankindisthatwesufferfromapoverty

ofthespiritwhichstandsinglaringcontrasttoourscientific

herwehavebecome

materially,thepoorerwehavebecomemorallyandspiritually.

Westerncivilizationisparticularlyvulnerableatthis

moment,forourmaterialabundancehasbroughtusneitherpeace

nwriterhasportrayed

ourdilemmaincandidterms:

Youcallyourthousandmaterialdevices“labor-saving

machinery,”yetyouareforever“busy.”Withthemultiplying

ofyourmachineryyougrowincreasingly

fatigued,anxious,nervous,eryouhave,you

wantmore;andwhereveryouare,youwanttogosomewhere

el...yourdevicesareneithertime-savingnorsoul-saving

esomanysharpspurswhichurgeyouonto

inventmoremachineryandtodomorebusiness.

Thistellsussomethingaboutourcivilizationthatcannot

becastasideasaprejudicedchargebyanEasternthinkerwho

otescapethe

indictment.

Thisdoesnotmeanthatwemustturnbacktheclockof

anoverlookthewondersthat

omobilewillnot

abdicateinfavorofthehorandbuggy,orthetraininfavor

ofthestagecoach,orthetractorinfavorofthehandplow,or

thescientificmethodinfavorofignoranceand

moralandspiritual“lag”mustbe

ientificpoweroutrunsmoralpower,weendup

foolishly

minimizetheinternalofourlivesandmaximizetheexternal,we

signthewarrantforourowndayofdoom.

Ourhopeforcreativelivinginthisworldhouthatwe

haveinheritedliesinourabilitytoreestablishthemoralends
