WangearnedhisfirstdegreeinarchitectureattheNanjingInstituteofTechnology,Departmentof

earslater,

hefirstgraduatedfromschool,hewenttoworkfortheZhejiangAcademyofFineArtsinHangzhou

undertakingrearchontheenvironmentandarchitectureinrelationtotherenovationofoldbuildings.

Nearlyayearlater,hewasatworkonhisfirstarchitecturalproject—thedesignofa3600squaremeter

YouthCenterforthesmalltownofHaining(nearHangzhou).Itwascompletedin1990.

Fornearlyallofthenexttenyears,heworkedwithcraftsmentogainexperienceatactualbuilding

1997,WangShuandhiswife,LuWenyu,foundedtheir

professionalpracticeinHangzhou,namingit“AmateurArchitectureStudio.”Heexplainsthename,

“Formylf,beinganartisanoracraftsman,isanamateuroralmostthesamething.”His

interpretationofthewordisrelativelyclotooneoftheunabridgeddictionary’sdefinitions:

“apersonwhoengagesinastudy,sportorotheractivityforpleasureratherthanforfinancial

benefitorprofessionalreasons.”InWangShu’sinterpretation,theword“pleasure”mightwell

bereplacedby“loveofthework.”

Bytheyear2000,hehadcompletedhisfirstmajorproject,theLibraryofWenzhengCollegeatSuzhou

ingwithhisphilosophyofpayingscrupulousattentiontotheenvironment,andwith

carefulconsiderationoftraditionsofSuzhougardeningwhichsuggeststhatbuildingslocatedbetween

waterandmountainsshouldnotbeprominent,hedesignedthelibrarywithnearlyhalfofthebuilding

Truetohismethodsofeconomyofmaterials,hesalvagedovertwomilliontilesfromdemolished

meyearinHangzhou,hebuilt

theVerticalCourtyardApartments,consistingofsix26-storytowers,whichwasnominatedin2008

Since2000,WangShuhasbeentheheadoftheArchitectureDepartmentoftheChinaAcademyofArt

inHangzhou,theinstitutionwherehedidrearchontheenvironmentandarchitecturewhenhefirst

WangShu,whomakeshishomeandworksinHangzhou,China,wasbornonNovember4,1963in

Urumqi,acityinthewesternmostprovinceofThePeople’sRepublicofChina,heris

her,wholivesinBeijing,isateacherforyoung

terfollowedintheirmother’sfootstepsandisalsoateacher.

Hisparents’pursuitssparkedWangShu’sinterestinmaterials,wasa

teenager,heoftenhadtotravel4000kmbetweenUrumqiandBeijing,whichtookfourdaysandfour

ravelsaffordedhimtheopportunitytogrowupexperiencingvast,changinglandscapes.

Withoutanyformalinstruction,arlyexperiences

emedtobeleadinghimtowardacareerasanartistorwriter.

ManyofShu’sdrawingswereleftonthewallsofthenarrowstreetadjacenttothecourtyardofthe

nyyearsafterhemovedaway,hisneighborsprotected

Afterveralmonthsofstudyingarchitecture,WangShuknewthatitwastheprofessionhewanted

AftergraduatingfromtheDepartmentofArchitectureatNanjingInstituteofTechnology,heworkedfor

theZhejiangAcademyofFineArtsinHangzhoudoingrearchontheenvironmentandarchitecturein

ayearlater,hewasatworkonhisfirstarchitectural

commission,thedesignofa3600squaremeterYouthCenterforthesmalltownofHaining(near

Bynaminghispractice“AmateurArchitectureStudio,”Wangexplainsthatthe“handicraftaspect”

ofhisworkismoreimportanttohimthatwhatheconsidersmuchofthe“professionalized,soulless

architecturepracticedtoday.”AtanarchitectureconferenceinBeijinginthe1980s,hecreated
