RightsofChildreninSouthAfrica,heldin1992,SomertWest,

CapeTown.

ThereisnothingSouthAfricanchildrenofwouldlikemorethanto

ethedawnofanewSouthAfrica,wheretheirrightswillbe

protected,andwheretheirchildhoodrestored.

AswemarkJune1,InternationalChildren”sDay,wearereminded

ofhowSouthAfricanchildren,especiallyblackchildren,havebeen

vesufferedhorribly

underthebrutalapartheidsystem.

TheANCWomen”sLeague,onthisparticularday,wouldliketothank

allorganisationsworkingtowardspromotingawareness,engagement

andmobilisationofSouthAfricancitizensindenouncingviolations

ofchildren”yimportantarewelfareorganisations

workinghardtogiveshelter,foodandclothingtothemoredeprived

children,whofamilyliveshavebeenbrokendownbyviolence,

unemploymentandothersocietalevils.

TheANCWomen”sLeaguesupportsthecallforahumanrightsmovement

whichwillmakespecificprovisionfortheprotectionand

developmentofchildren.

Atthesametime,theLeaguewouldliketobringtoattentionthe

plightofyounggirlswhospecialneedsarethreatenedbythe

societyneedstoendgenderdiscriminationfromtheearliestyears

ifgirlsaretobegiventheopportunitytoreachtheirfull

rmore,girlneedstobeprotectedfromallforms

ofharmfultraditionalpracticesthatconfinethemtocertainroles

whichdonotallowthemtodeveloptotheirfullpotential.

Littlegirlsasyoungastwoyearshavebecomevictimsofrapein

areforcedintoabusiverelationshipsand

dmenclaimthata13-year-oldgirlis“oldenough

“toagreetoarelationshipwitha60-year-oldman.

WeshouldalsobearinmindthattheOrganisationofAfricanUnity

recentlydeclaredJune16theDayoftheAfricanChild.

ThisisatributetothemillionsofSouthAfricanchildren

traumatidbytheeffectsofapartheidrepression,andalsothe

thousandsofchildrenwhohavebeenactiveindrawinginternational

andnationalawarenesstotheirplights.
