Fivescoreyearsago,agreatAmerican,inwhosymbolicshadow

westandtoday,

momentousdecreecameasagreatbeaconlightofhopetomillions

ofNegroslaveswhohadbeenaredintheflamesofwithering

asajoyousdaybreaktoendthelongnightof

theircaptivity.

Butonehundredyearslater,dred

yearslater,thelifeoftheNegroisstillsadlycrippledbythe

hundredyearslater,theNegrolivesonalonelyislandofpoverty

yearslater,theNegroisstilllanguishedinthecornersof

sowe”vecomeheretodaytodramatizeashamefulcondition.

Whenthearchitectsofourrepublicwrotethemagnificentwordsof

theConstitutionandtheDeclarationofIndependence,theywere

ThemarvelousnewmilitancywhichhangulfedtheNegrocommunity

mustnotleadustoadistrustofallwhitepeople,formanyofour

IhaveadreamthatonedayontheredhillsofGeorgia,thesons

offormerslavesandthesonsofformerslaveownerswillbeable

swelteringwiththeheatofinjustice,swelteringwiththeheatof

oppression,willbetransformedintoanoasisoffreedomandjustice.

racists,withitsgovernorhavinghislipsdrippingwiththewords

of“interposition“and“nullification“--onedayrightthere

inAlabamalittleblackboysandblackgirlswillbeabletojoin
